Hodgkins, Jr., Gail Miller Awarded Singles Trophies In Tennis Tourney Bellows & Co,, Louisville, Ky. • Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey -86 Proof Trophies were presented to some of the winners and runners- up in the recent Moore County Tournament at a meeting of the Sandhill Tennis Association last week and Dick Kobleur, presi dent, asked that others who won trophies come to his place of business. The Tog Shop, and get them. The tournament has been play ed off over the past two months at times and places convenient to the participants. They were in terrupted by the holding of the annual junior and adult Sandhill Invitational tournaments, and final matches were delayed by rains. N. L. Hodgkins, Jr., was award ed the winner’s trophy in men’s singles, and Julian Pleasants whom Hodgkins defeated 6-2, 6-0, received the runner-up - w-rd. To be presented later was the winner’s trophy in women’s singles to Gail Miller, while Hodgkins took with him the run ner-up trophy for his wife Sara, '■'’'iss Miller’s winning score over Mrs. Hodgkins was 6-3, 6-3. Junior Winners Keith Gernold and Charles Sneed of Pinehurst received the winner and runner-up trophies re.spectively in junior boys’ sin gles. To be presented were those in junior girls’ singles, Maureen Hassenfelt, winner and Susan Huntley, runner-up. It was agreed the tournament had been a success despite inter ruptions, and plans were laid for a doubles tournament that is be- in? run off before college open ing time. Kobleur presided over the meeting, held in the municipal courtroom. Hodgkins reported on the two Sandhill Invitationals, junior and adult, held the first two weekends in August, which were among the most successful in the history of these events. Officials Praised The junior tournament match ed last year’s record with an en try list of practically 100, while the adult event had about 75. Hodgkins credited their smooth operation to the well organized work of John McMillan as tour nament director. He also praised the excellent endeavors of Mrs. Dorothy McMillan in charge of trophies, and Mrs. Lillian Hunt- ley, in charge of housing. Only thing wrong was the all day rain Sunday, August 9, which drowned out all the adult final events. These have been played off at various places about the State as reported in last week’s Pilot, and wil be completed here September 20, when senior (age 45 and over) singles and doubles will be reeed off on the local courts, starting at 2:30 pm.
