The Southern Pines High
School Blue Knights under the
direction of Coach Tony Trentini,
overwhelmed Coach Sam Col
lins’s Littlefield Hornets Friday
for their second consecutive vic
tory. The Knights displayed a
balanced attack throughout the
game, scoring in each of the four
periods.
In the first quarter. Southern
Pines drove 59 yards in six plays,
with Jerry Wilson scoring from
three yards out. Ricky Johnson
then passed to Wilson for the ex
tra point which gave the locals a
7-0 lead at the end of the first
quarter.
In the second period, Scott
Gutierrez intercepted a Little
field pass and returned it to the
visitors’ own 42-yard line. The
Knights then scored in six plays.
With Hal Hassenfelt going over
from the two-yard line and Ricky
Johnson passing to Peter Pezzi
for the extra point. At halftime.
Southern Pines led, 14-0.
The Knights received the kick
off at the beginning of the third
period and, aided by some ef
fective ball-carrying by Peter
Pezzi, drove to the Hornet one-
yard line, where they lost the
ball on downs; On the ensuing
play, Kenny Meares, the Little
field quarterback, was tackled in
his own end zone for a safety. A
host of Blue Knights, led by
James Mallow, Mike Bucholz,
Harry Webb, and Hal Hassenfelt,
were given credit for the tackle.
On the kickoff following the safe
ty, the Knights’ Ricky Johnson
raced 72 yards for a touchdown.
Hassenfelt carried the ball over
for the extra point.
Thes points gave the Knights a
23-0 lead at the end of the third
quarter.
In the last period, Littlefield
drove to the Southern Pines five-
yard line before the Knights’ de
fence stiffened and succeeded in
stopping their march. The local
squad then drove 95 yards in 12
plays for another touchdown with
Wilson chalking up his second
of the evening on a 15-yard end
sweep. Pezzi ran for the extra
point.
Coach Trentini was delighted
with the spirit and aggressive
ness which characterized the play
of the local squad, and felt this
was the team’s best effort of the
young season.
On Friday, September 25, the
Knights .iourney to St. Pauls for
a conference game with the St.
Pauls Bulldogs. The Bulldogs will
be out for a victory after their
loss to Robbins last week, as the
Knights try to increase their con
ference record to 3-0. Gametime
is set for 8 pm, with a large
group of Southern Pines sup
porters expected to attend.
