(Humphrey photo) Knights Blank Littlefield 30 - 0 By John McLaughlin The Southern Pines High School Blue Knights under the direction of Coach Tony Trentini, overwhelmed Coach Sam Col lins’s Littlefield Hornets Friday for their second consecutive vic tory. The Knights displayed a balanced attack throughout the game, scoring in each of the four periods. In the first quarter. Southern Pines drove 59 yards in six plays, with Jerry Wilson scoring from three yards out. Ricky Johnson then passed to Wilson for the ex tra point which gave the locals a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second period, Scott Gutierrez intercepted a Little field pass and returned it to the visitors’ own 42-yard line. The Knights then scored in six plays. With Hal Hassenfelt going over from the two-yard line and Ricky Johnson passing to Peter Pezzi for the extra point. At halftime. Southern Pines led, 14-0. The Knights received the kick off at the beginning of the third period and, aided by some ef fective ball-carrying by Peter Pezzi, drove to the Hornet one- yard line, where they lost the ball on downs; On the ensuing play, Kenny Meares, the Little field quarterback, was tackled in his own end zone for a safety. A host of Blue Knights, led by James Mallow, Mike Bucholz, Harry Webb, and Hal Hassenfelt, were given credit for the tackle. On the kickoff following the safe ty, the Knights’ Ricky Johnson raced 72 yards for a touchdown. Hassenfelt carried the ball over for the extra point. Thes points gave the Knights a 23-0 lead at the end of the third quarter. In the last period, Littlefield drove to the Southern Pines five- yard line before the Knights’ de fence stiffened and succeeded in stopping their march. The local squad then drove 95 yards in 12 plays for another touchdown with Wilson chalking up his second of the evening on a 15-yard end sweep. Pezzi ran for the extra point. Coach Trentini was delighted with the spirit and aggressive ness which characterized the play of the local squad, and felt this was the team’s best effort of the young season. On Friday, September 25, the Knights .iourney to St. Pauls for a conference game with the St. Pauls Bulldogs. The Bulldogs will be out for a victory after their loss to Robbins last week, as the Knights try to increase their con ference record to 3-0. Gametime is set for 8 pm, with a large group of Southern Pines sup porters expected to attend. L. Bradley, has been chosen Player of the Week by Head Coach Tony Trentini and Assistant Coach Larry Addleton for his outstanding play in last week’s Littlefield game. Larry is a member of Emman- ue Episcopal Church where he is president of the St. Vincent’s Guild. A senior, he has been a member of the high school’s Monogram Club for three years. His subjects for the present school year include trigonometry, advanced algebra, sociology and economics, Spanish H, bookkeep ing, and English IV.
