BY JOHN McLaughlin
The Southern Pines High
School Blue Knights trimmed the
Saint Pauls High School Bulldogs
on Friday, September 25, by the
score of 26-6, for the local team’s
third consecutive Cape Fear Con
ference victory.
After receiving the opening
kickoff, the knights marched 82
yards in eight plays for a touch
down. A 25-yard run by Peter
Pezzi, and a 24-yard run by Jerry
Wilson accounted for most of the
yardage in this drive, with Wilson
scoring from eight yards out.
Ricky Johnson passed to Peter
Pezzi for the extra point. South
ern Pines led at the end of the
first quarter by the score of 7-0.
In the second quarter, the Blue
Knights drove 56 yards in five
plays to notch another touchdown.
Johnny Rowe carried 20 yards for
the score with James Mallow
carrying for the extra point. With
just two minutes remaining in the
second quarter, Ricky Johnson
launched a 36-yard pass to Peter
Pezzi for another touchdown. At
the end of the half, Southern
Pines led 20-0.
Early in the third quarter,
Peter Pezzi hauled in a punt on
the Saint Pauls 45-yard line and
raced' all the way for a touch
down.
Saint Pauls scored its lone
touchdown in the third period on
a sustained drive of 70 yards.
Bobby Wilson, the Bulldogs’ full
back, scored from the one-yard
line.
Coach Tony Trentini was satis
fied with his team’s first half
play, but was disappointed with
the squad’s second half effort. He
feels that the Knights should pro
fit from their mistakes and limit
these errors for the remainder of
the season.
On Friday, October 2, the
Knights returned home to Me
morial Field for a conference bat
tle with the Red Springs Red
Devils. Red Springs, which has
shown vast improvement as the
season progresses, promises to
prove itself a worthy opponent.
Gametime is set for 8 p.m.
