NEWS WEEKLY.
Apples and rice are the fea
tured items on the plentiful food
list for the harvest month of Oc
tober. Also included are beef,
cheese and turkeys—all versatile
and popular protein foods.
Miss Gaynelle Hogan, Exten
sion consumer marketing econ
omist at N. C. State, Raleigh,
says this season’s bumper apple
crop IS the largest since 1937.
Around 147 milion bushels are
expected this year. Shoppers
everywhere can look forward to
good selections of high quality
apples at favorable retail prices.
October is Rice Festival
Month and rightly so, for econ
omists expect a record harvest of
rice this year—73 million hun
dredweight. There will be plenty
of all kinds of rice, particularly
the medium and long grain varie
ties. Mounds of hot rice make the
perfect accompaniment for Ori
ental dishes. Then use any rice
that may be left over for a de
lectable skillet of fried rice the
next day. Miss Hogan suggests.
Shoppers can expect to find
plenty of turkeys at reasonable
prices. Production is up about
seven per cent over last year.
Roast turkey stuffed with an
!apple-rice dressing needs only
a vegetable and perhaps a salad
course. Plan to have turkey left
during the week. Or freeze
some good-size portions of meat
for meals weeks later, says the
economist.
October also is Cheese Festival
Month, during which a great
many varieties of cheese will be
plentiful. At most any meal of
the day—for appetizer, a main
course, or dessert—cheese is
definitely in order. Miss Hogan
notes.
Beef supplies are expected to
continue plentiful through Octo
ber. For hearty fall appetites
serve beef stew with plenty of
vegetables and dumplings or
baking powder biscuits. Hambur
gers will be popular during foot
ball weather—for both pre-and
post-game refreshments.
