Stewart of Car thage outgoing Presbyterial pres ident, presided last Wednesday and Thursday at the 75th anni versary meeting of the Women of Fayetteville Presbytery of the Synod of North Carolina. The session, opening with the annual meeting of the Executive Board, was held at the First Presbyterian Church of Red Springs. Mrs. Colon McLean of Wash ington, N. C., synodical president, was the speaker at the dinner for Executive Board members and special guests. The meeting ended with the election and installation of new officers for the Women of Fay etteville Presbytery, and Mrs. Stewart presented the gavel to her successor, Mrs. John H. Nance of Fayetteville. Mrs. Clin ton P. Campbell of Carthage was named vice president. Of special interest on the Thursday afternoon program was a history, “Seventy-five Years of Service,” compiled by Miss Mary McEachern of Red Springs, past Presidential synodical historian, and presented by Mrs. P. P. Mc Cain, former Southern Pines res ident, of Wilson, who is a past Presbyterial president. Dr. Ligon was for 10 years pastor of Brown- son Memorial Presbyterian Church here. Dr. Robert G. Hall, minister of Red Springs church, Wednesday gave a talk on “Glory in the Church,” as revealed in the study of Ephesians, a study continued at the Thursday morning service by Dr. James Appleby of Rich mond, Va. On Thursday morning, the Rev. J.V.C. Summerell of Fayette ville’s First Church gave an ad dress on “The Living Word in Our Life Today.” An honorary life membership was presented Mrs. H C. Mc- Lauchlin of Raeford, past Pres byterial president, by the histori an, Mrs. I. J. Lancaster of Park- ton. Among new committee chair men are: Ecumenical Missions and Relations, Mrs. George Chevy, and White Cross, Mrs. Harold Markham, both from West End. Named a District chairman, from Moore County, was Mrs. Vvl. A. McGill of Aberdeen, District 6. John Blue Chapter, UDC, Holds Meeting The John Blue Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confed eracy, met Wednesday, October 14 in the Golden Door room at Howard Johnson restaurant. On arrival, the hostesses, Mrs. John Sloan, Mts. H. W. Doub, Mrs. W. D. Caviness and Mrs. W. L. Rus sell, served' delicious refresh ments to the members present. Mrs. H. W. Doub led in the reading of the ritual and the salute to the flags. A prayer was read in memory of Mrs. I. A. j Thompson, a member who died ] recently. Mrs. C. S. Patch, Sr., president, presided, and heard committee reports. Mrs. C. E. Pleasants presented the names of two proposed mem bers, Mrs. Hazel Kobler and Miss Patricia Ann Patch. The club voted to accept them as members. Mrs. Forrest Lockey, library chairman, reported the book, “Those 163 Days” by John M. Gibson had been placed in the library in loving memory of Miss Pearl McMillan. Mrs. A. L. Burney introd'uced Mrs. George Martin who gave a delightflul reading, “The Story of Miss Mary Surratt.” In con clusion, Mrs. Burney played several records of Civil War songs. Hobbs, tied for first place low net in the Wednesday tournament of the Par Seekers, women’s golfing as sociation of the Southern Pines Country Club. Upon matching cards, Mrs. Hobbs was declared winner. Mrs. T. C. Worth, Jr. took the prize for low putts. Pennsylvania Ave. Southern Pines Son Of West End Couple Wed Saturday Miss Jessie Marie Merritt was married to Franklin R. Farmer of Winston-Salem at 3 o’clock Sat urday afternoon. The bride is the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Oscar E. Merritt of Tobaccoville. Her father performed the cere mony at the Methodist Parson age, The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Farmer of West End. He graduated from West End High School, attended the University of North Carolina and was graduated from Gaston Technical Institute in Gastonia. He is employed by Kirkman Elec tronic Inc., in Winston-Salem. The bride is a graduate of King High School and is employed by the Western Electric Company in Winston-Salem. She wore a street-length dress of pink satin brocade with match ing headdress, and carried a col onial bouquet of pink sweetheart roses and Baker’s fern. The bride’s parents entertained at a reception at their home. After a wedding trip, the couple will be at home at 3745 Avera Ave., Winston-Salem. Members of the Farmer family attending the wedding were Mr. and Mrs. Farmer and Philip, Donald Farmer of King’s College, Charlotte; Mr. and Mrs. Jerry L. Everett Jordan, in her talk Wednesday at the Christian Women’s Club lunch meeting at the Whispering Pines Dobbs House Restaurant. “Christian women in Washing ton are doing just that,” added the speaker, who is the wife of North Carolina Senator Jordan, in her talk which centered on her Christian experiences in the nation’s capital. Mrs. Jordan, was for two years president of the Congressional Women’s Prayer Group, Almost 150 women from over the county attended the monthly meeting, presided over by Mrs. C. A. This is the night also, of the Post’s Fall Festival. The afghan now on display at Mack’s 5&10 will be given the winner at that time. Proceeds from the sale will be earmarked' for various Auxiliary projects such as hospital work and rehabilitation fund. A donation has been sent by the Auxiliary to the Jaycee’s Lighting Fund and also, to the VA Hospital at Oteen to be used toward the purchase of Christ mas presents for patients unable to buy their own. Next regular meeting of the group is October 28, when plans will be made for the District meeting to be held here in November. Mrs. Cameron Takes Course In Dental Hygiene At UNC Mrs. Hubert Cameron spent Monday and Tuesday in Chapel Hill, where she took a course at UNC in “New Concepts and Techniques in Dental Hygiene Practice.” The course was spon sored by the UNC Extension Di vision and Curriculum for Dental Hygiene, a continuing education program for dental hygienists. A graduate of Columbia Uni versity’s School of Dental Hy giene, Mrs. Cameron has been associated with Dr. R. Bruce Warlick in his office here for three years. During the two-day session, she roomed with Miss Nancy Jo Traylor, a dental hy gienist in New Bern and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don F. Traylor, Jr. of Southern Pines. Hiatt, Jr. pre sided last Wednesday at an ex ecutive committee meeting of the new Sanford District WSCS of the Methodist Church, and en tertained the 18 district and conference officers at luncheon. Both the morning meeting and luncheon were at her home on Midland Road. Plans were made for sub-district meetings to be held later. Mrs. Hiatt is district president. One such meeting took place today, Thursday, at the Aber deen Methodist Church, with members of the Southern Pines Methodist WSCS attending. This was the Moore .Sub-District Workshop, with a skit presented and plans made for study courses throughout the year. dtteJk.
