Thanks to tranquilizing drugs and other new developments in the “Silent Revolution” against mental illness, the outlook for mental patients is brighter today than at any time in the past. Flanigan declared. In most cases, he said, with to day’s drugs and therapy, the mental patient has a better than 80 per cent chance of returning to society within six months. As recently as 1954, he noted, the patient who entered a mental hospital had only a 50-50 chance of getting out again. “What a former patient wants above all is a chance to pick up the thread of his life, to be ac cepted once more by his family, his friends and his community,” Flanigan said. ~ “Despite advances ' against mental illness achieved through new drugs and new therapy, it remains the nation’s number one health problem.” According to the National As sociation for Mental Health, men tal illness of some kipd eifflicts 16 million Americans, striking one person in ten, one family in four, Flanigan declared. + BUILDING? + BUYING?
