S. B. Vinton of Lovell, Maine, is
demonstrating his work at Mid
land Grafters, on Midland Road,
this week.
His dishes from Deer Country
Kilns are pieces of Maine (North
Carolina this week) Flora perma
nently caught in pottery. He uses
grasses, flowers, twigs, even in
sects occasionally in dishes shap
ed around rocks. The variations
possible are limited only by the
imagination of the potter, he
says, and his work has a unique
charm.
Mr. Vinton’s own background
is as colorful as his work. Born in
Burma of fourth generation mis
sionaries, he was, in his young
adult life, a concert pianist. Since
taking to the Maine woods sonae
30 years ago he has supported his
family of four by running a
camp, guiding hunting and fish’
ing parties, teaching music and
debating and, in recent years,
making his appealing Deer Coun
try dishes.
