P. Thomp son, and Mr. and Mrs. True P. Cheney, was former Pinehurst resident, Mrs. Thomas L. Black of Durham. Thomas R. Rudel of New York Cify was the weekend guest of his mother, Mrs. C. M. Rudel. Here this past weekend as guests of the Countess of Carrick were her cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Schlax, who were en route from their summer home in Cleveland, Ohio, to their winter place at Clearwater Beach, Fla. Mr. and Mrs. Louis R. Porteous have arrived from Portland, Maine, and are occupying their home here for the winter months. Getting here today, Thursday, from Scituate, Mass., are Mr. and Mrs. Chauncey Bartholet and Anne, who will spend about a week with Mrs. Bartholet’s grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Warren at The Case ments. Mrs. C. Louis Meyer arrived last weekend at her place on the Airport Road for the season. She has been at her home in Lake Forest, Ill. Mrs. Walter D. Hyatt is back from her summer home at Range- ley Lakes, Maine, and is at her place here for the coming season. I BARRETT, VEST AGAIN ON TEAM Basketball Season Starts Friday For Rebels, 1963-’64 State Runners-Up By GERALD GARNER On Friday, November 6, the Pinehurst Rebels will take the floor against the warriors of Sea- grove High School at Seagrove. This will start the Rebels on an other 26 game season which looks as promising as the one of last year. The Rebels finished the 1963- ’64 season with a 34-1 record and the title of State Runner-up. The Rebels have a record of 65 wins against 2 losses for the past two seasons. , Returning from last years starting lineup will be two sen iors, Wiley Barrett, a 6-5 center, who led the Moore County Con ference in total points last year, and Don Vest—a 6-2 forward, one of the leading percentage shooters in the Conference. Pinehurst Readent Honored On Birthday On her 76th birthday, October 25, Mrs. A. E. Teague, who lives in Pinehurst with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John L. McKenzie, was honored at a dinner party in Hamlet. In addition to Mrs. Teague and the McKenzies, other family mem bers present were Mrs. Teague’s other daughters, Mrs. Thomas V. Homer of Pinehurst, Mrs. Lewis Frye, her husband and daughter, from Fayetteville, and Mrs. W. Z. Horn and her husband, of Whiteville. tutes of last year, are Johnny Williamson, 6-foot forward and Mike Lunday—a 6-foot guard. The other guard spot will be filled by Steve Horner—a 5-111 junior. I The players are enthusiastic I about their chances this season and are expecting their biggest competition from Aberdeen, Southern Pines and Union Pines High Schools. The Rebels will travel to Hoff man, Wednesday, November 11, and will play their first home game Friday, November 13. The girls’ game will start at 7 pm and the boys’ game immediately following. Stuart Brown, Jr. of Sewickley, Pa. posted 40>-42-82 yesterday to take low gross of the field in the sixth Gertrude Jones Williamson Memorial Tournament. The tourney, play ed on Number One Course, with an entry of 61 members, honors the memory of the first S. F. Club captain. Pinehurst cottager Mrs. El- bridge S. Sidway and Carolina guest Mrs. Durand Churchill, of New York City, tied at 72 for low net of the field. A play-off will be held at a later date to determine the win ner. In Class A, Pinehurst cot tagers Mrs. John W. Rettew, and Mrs. Michael T. Pishko, tied for low net with 73’s. On matching cards backwards [according to handicap, Mrs. Ret- 1 tew was declared first place I winner. Due to the low net of the field playoff between Mrs. Sidway and Mrs. Churchill, 1st and 2nd low net winners in class B and C will be announced later. Low putts prize was won by Mrs. John W. Haskell, 50, of Titusville, Pa., who posted 80-81-84-245 to win the three-day North & South Women’s Seniors Invitational at the Pinehurst Country Club. She had never played here before. Tied at 247 for runner-up honors were Miss Betty S. Abernethy of Pittsburgh, Pa. and a former cham pion, Mrs. Harrison F. Flippin of Douglasville, Pa., who were awarded duplicate prizes. Mrs. J. C. French Club The French Club of Pinehurst High School met last Monday in Miss Brewer’s home room. As the secretary called the roll, the members answered by quoting in French, a proverb or maxim. The program theme was “French Impressionist Artists.” Several of the second-year French students gave reports on such painters as Degas, Renoir, Monet, etc. The treasurer, Mike Lewis, was appointed chairman of a committee to propose money making plans for the club this year. The colonial structure, built by the foundation in the Village Green on land donated by Pine hurst, Inc., is a memorial to Mr and Mrs. John L. Given, estab- lishers of the foundation, who owned a home here and were among early Pinehurst winter residents. Other trustees of the Given Foundation who will be present for the dedication, which begins at 11 am, are Mrs. Clifford S Heinz and Frank Cliffe of Pitts burgh. Pa., Harold W. Conroy and Dr. M. M. Melicow of New York City, Robert J. Bruno of Stamford, Conn., and Eric Nel son of Pinehurst. J.; second, Mr. and Mrs. Frank deCosta of Pecos Pete, a well known partner of the Old Rebel on WFMY-TV, Greensboro, visited the children at the request of Mrs. Livengood, a fifth grade teacher of Pinehurst School. Pecos presented a health and safety program last Thursday as the young admirers watched in awe. By using magic, Pecos Pete showed the children the danger of playing with matches and fire. While presenting a demonstra tion of gun safety, he fired his six-shooter, and a few of the for tunate boys and girls participa ted in parts of the demonstra tions. As Pecos played his guitar, the children sang with him, his famous theme song.
