Fewer Farmers Produce More, Speaker
Says; Hulsey Elected New President
Speaking to members of Moore
County Farm Bureau at their An
nual Meeting in the Carthage
nual Meeting Saturday, October
31, W. E. Little, commodities di
rector of the N. C. Farm Bureau,
said, “Four per cent of the pop
ulation in the United States now
produce 90 per cent of the food
and fiber,” reminding farmers
that they are becoming more and
more a “minority group.”
Little emphasized strength of
membership in Farm Bureau as a
means to protecting agricultural
interests, pointing out that, in
the United States, Farm Bureau
membership is now 37,000 ahead
of last year and in Souhteastern
States more than 30,000 ahead of
last year. Thus on a comparative
basis, southern states are gain
ing membership faster than the
nation as a whole, he said, which
should mean increased influence
on setting of overall policies. He
compared Farm Bureau organi
zation to a pipewrench, a tool
adjustable to many jobs, and
membership was compared to the
teeth of the wrench.
Little said that Congress can
repeal support price and acreage
allotment practices at any time,
although producing areas may
favor them. However, he praised

at state and national conventions,
was the democratic way of letting
legislatures and Congress know
the needs of the farmer.

barbecue served by Lee Williams
and his food committee. Following
invocation by the Rev. Michael
Ray of Carthage and the singing
