his father looks proudly on. Also proud of Jody were his grand
mother, Mrs. Walter Edwards, and his uncle and aunt, Mr. and
Mrs. John S. Ruggles, all of Southern Pines. Jody, whose mother,
the former Eleonor Edwards, lived here before her marriage,
is a member of Troop 410 of the Cape Fear Valley Council, a
sophomore at Hoke County High school, and member of the
Key Club, Junior Classical League and Junior Varsity football
team.

Arctic Hills, Owned By Mrs. Cardy,
Earns $17,350 In Race At Woodbine
Arctic Hills, a colt owned by
Mrs. Vernon G. Cardy, former
Sandhills resident who was
prominent several years ago in
equestrian activities here, cap
tured iihe 74th running of the
Breeder Stakes at Woodbine, On
tario, Canada, last month.
Ridden by Dick Armstrong,
Arctic Hills earned $17,350 for
his owner, scoring a half-length
victory over Willow Downs
Farm’s Fast Answer on the mile
and a half turf course.
Arctic Hills comes into the
news again this week, with nom
ination to run in the Mason-
Dixon Handicap $20,000 added
for three-year-olds at Laurel Md.,
Saturday, November 7. The race
will be one mile on the turf.
The Breeders Stakes is the
third leg of the “Canadian Triple
Crown.” Including his victory in
that race, Arctic Hills had earn
ed $30,564 this year.
Mrs. Cardy and her husband,
who is president of the Cardy-

the training farm, off Bethesda
Road, that is now the property
of Miss Eleonora Sears.
Under the Cahdy ownership,
the place was known as Vernon

day against William Hayden guilty, he was
Harrison, 26, of 107 North 2nd guilty and sentenced to
St., Sanford. He was accused of
setting fire to the dwelling of his
parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
Ralph Bennett of Highway 27
west of Carthage, where his wife
and three young children, along
with her parents, were sleeping
the night of October 26.
Judge J. Vance Rowe ordered
the release of Ray Worley, 32, of
Sanford, George White, 36, of
Sanford Rt. 6 and John Wade
White, 24, of Olivia, as he found
no probable cause against them
on charges of aiding and abet
ting in the arson attempt. All
four men pleaded not guilty.
Chief Deputy Sheriff H. H
Grimm testified concerning the
fire, which was put out by
neighbors before it damaged the
house greatly, and read a state
ment which had been signed by
Harrison to the effect that he
had been drinking that night,
and that he had set the fire to
try and frighten his wife into
coming back to him.
Harrison took the stand and
admitted going to the Bennetts’
late that night and piling kind
ling wood against the rear of the
house. However, under instruc
tions from his court-appointed
lawyer, hf declined to be more
specific. He also responded
vaguely to questions of the pros
ecution designed to implicate the
three other men with whom
he had admittedly driven to or
near the Bennett home.
Testimony of Ray Worley was
that he had driven Harrison and
the others in his car that night,
but that he thought Harrison
meant only to “talk things over”
with his separated wife. He said
he parked some distance down
the road, at a spot where Harri
son later returned to the car, be
cause he thought “there might
be a fight” and he didn’t want
to get' involved.
Judge Rowe ordered Harrison
held for grand jury action at the
criminal term of Moore superior
court next week, setting no bond
for him. He was tried Monday
also on a charge of abandonment
and non-support of his wife and
three young children, aged two,
four and five. He had been ar
rested first on a capias on this
charge following the arson at
tempt, and the warrant for arson

TEMPERATURE
You really can tell the tem
perature by listening to the chirp
of the cricket. Both field and
tree crickets vary the speed of
their chirps with the tempera
ture. One can estimate the tem
perature by counting the num
ber of chirps per minute, dividing
by 4, and adding 40.
