A CHRISTMAS TURKEY was won at the Christmas Eve holi day hole-in-one shoot at the Pinehurst Country Club by Robert S. Barrett, Jr. The 13-year-old Bob, son of the owners of the Pine Crest Inn, is shown, right, holding the turkey he won (and later donated to a local hospital) when his drive landed a scant nine inches from the pin. With him are his father and brother, Peter. The three Barretts played Tuesday in the Donald J. Ross Father-Son golf tournament which followed Monday’s DJR Memorial Tournament for junior golfers at the Pinehurst club. Both events are held yearly at Christmastime to honor the memory of the late Pinehurst resident, architect of four of the five courses here. Mrs. Rock, before her marriage December 12, was Miss Barbara McDowell. She is Mrs. Morrison’s daughter. Marshall Memorial Today, December 31, is the birthdate of the late General George C. Marshall. During his retirement years, when he and his wife were Pinehurst winter residents, the General celebrated his birthday quietly with a gath ering of close friends, in contrast to the frequently hectic parties going on in most places on New Years’s Eve. But the General and his wife were among the most reserved and unobtrusive residents who ever came here. Since General Marshall’s death in 1959, a yearly memorial serv ice for him has been held at Mar shall Park, named in his honor shortly before he died. This service, until last year, was held as close to December 31 as possible. However, because Mrs. Marshall, who always at tends, does not come to the Sand hills until later in the winter, and because of the usual undependa bility of the weather at this time of year, the date was changed to IN PINEHURST TUESDAYS and FRIDAYS PLEASE CALL OX 2-6101 Carters Laundry & Cleaners, Inc. 155 W. New York Ave. Southern Pinei early spring. And this year, also, the service will be held in late April, ac cording to a spokesman for the American Legion, which is in charge' of the event. He is married to the for mer Mrs. Susan Bertrand of Pinehurst. 'Let's Try A Cat' After narrowly squeaking past three dogs, who frisked gaily into the path of our car in Southern Pines, we can feel for the young ster who in talking with a cot tager here, told him they had had bad luck with dogs—“lost 20 of them, killed by cars.” Faced with this appalling lossl ratio, the youngster commented, “My old man said, ‘let’s try a cat.’ So, we did.” Asked how the cat was doing, the young owner replied, “Oh, he has a broken leg.” We wish, for all of you, much better luck than this in ’65.
