She told me that they were strong plants when set and that she used peat and sand mixed with her red clay when they were planted. Nov/ she says that they are old enough to bloorn but only one rather weak bloom has ap peared, ntedq-jlya Lilacs prefer a deep, rich soil and one that is not too acid. I suggested that she have her soil tested and use enough lime to raise the pH to about 6.5 or 7.0. Also, that she fer tilize the plants with a good general purpose fertilizer such as 8-8-8. Generally speaking, lilacs seem to grow better in the up per Piedmont and mountains than in the lower Piedmont and eastern Carolina. They do especially well in “limestone country.” Azalea Not Growing Another lady was worried about a nice azalea (Indica) plant which was not growing as it should. I stopped bv to see this plant. It was healthy enough but was rather flat- topped as the terminal shoots were not elongating as they should. After examining the plant 1 decided that it had been plant ed too deep. In addition, it was heavily mulched with leaves. This did not pose much of a problem because the plan was easily raised a little vnth a round pointed shovel and a little extra care. If the plants are ball ed and burlapped the top of the ball should be set even with the soil line and then mulched. The same is true for container grown plants. Pine straw is better than leaves 'or peat because water penetrates more easily . Mow Lawn RecifularI(T Mow your lawn regularly. This is very important. Set the mower to cut the blades of grass at about one and one- half to two inches. This is best for most grasses. Bermuda, Zoysia and other “warm sea son” grasses may be cut clos er. . You may have wet spots m your lawn which need aera ting. If the spots are not too large, this job may be accom.- plished by forcing a spading fork into the soil to a depth of three or four inches. Oxygen is essential for proper root growth 'on all plants. If you think poor soil aeration may be a problem in your lawn, mechanical aerators may be rented; or you might contact rented; or you might contact your local yard maintenance man for help. From World War I Frank Swan of Andrews and Bob Sloan of Fontana Dam are reunion co-chairmen. Swan has been particularly' gratified at the large number of World War I survivors who have indicated they plan to at tend. Because of their age, many will be flying in, with one reservation on hand from as far away as South Dakota. Host for the gathering will be the Tar Heel Chapter of the 30th Infantry Division Associ ation. Officers are President E. L. Hollowell of Edenton, and Secretary J. B. Liles of Raleigh. Captain Frank Swan of Andrews is Vice president in addition to being reunion co-chairman. The 30th Division, originally made up of national guards men of North and South Caro lina, Georgia and Tennessee, distinguished itself during World War I with a break through of the Hindenburg Line. During the second World War it was given the acco lade of being the “Workhorse of the Western Front” by war correspondent Hal Boyle. The Division landed in France in June, 1944, shortly after D- Day, and remained in combat until it reached Magdeburg, Germany, in one of the deepest penetrations of Germany by the American Army. The 30th Division continues as North Carolina’s National Guard division, with a unit headquartered at the armory here. Major John Craig, historian and writer of Charlote, will attend. To augment his collec tion of human interest anec dotes he plans to use in a per sonal narrative of World War II, when he served as Provost Marshal of the Old Hickory Division. One of his anecdotes regarding Col. Howell Hatcher, formerly of the 30th Division, appeared in the April issue of the Reader’s Digest. De-emphasis On Business The reunion will be primari ly a gathering of 'old friends, with their children and grand children, with a de-emphasis on business sessions, accord ing to co-chairman Sloan. In lieu of the traditional banquet' at such affairs, a lakeshore charcoal broiled steak cook out will be held across Fon tana Lake in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Col. James W. Perkins, Ad jutant General of the 3uth during World War H, present ly living in Nashville, Tennes see, will also be present, as will some of the World War I commanders, including Major W. H. Hyde who commanded the 113th MG Battalion dur ing the first World War. This will be the first large gathering of World War I sur vivors .since their 1936 reunion held in South Carolina. General Hobbs Dies All W'orld War II veterans were saddened to learn that Major General Leland S. Hobbs, division commander in the European Theater during World War II, died March 6, at the age of 74. A special me morial service will be held in his memory, at a short busi- nes session Saturday after noon, May 21. LOST KEY?... ... may mean costly delay and inconvenience.
