H. T. Anthony) Carol Kelly Enlists In Air Force, Following In Footsteps Of Brother Miss Carol R. Kelly, 22, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Kelly of Route 2, Carthage, has enlisted in the US Air Force for four years. Technical Sgt. Richard D. Davis, Rockingham recruiter, ■Said Miss Kelly enlisted July 25. .She is now at Lackland Air Force Base in San An tonio, Texas, undergoing six weeks of basic military train ing. Carol is the second mem ber of the Kelly household to join the Air Force in July. Her brother, James, II, enlist ed July 5 and is also now at Lackland. Miss Kelly is a 1964 gradu ate of Carthage High School. In high school she was class president during her junior and senior years, a member of the Beta Club, president of the FHA, a member of the Mono- grana Club and a senior “su perlative.” She played guard on the high school basketball team for four years. Miss Kelly attended Appal achian College in Boone for three years, majoring in ele mentary psychology. During the past year she worked as a teacher’s aide at Carthage Ele mentary School and later as a peace corps trainee in the health program. The opportunity to finish her college education and to travel were the main reasons Miss Kelly decided to join the Air Force. “These are the two biggest reasons young women are enlisting in the Air Force today,” Sgt. Davis said. Miss Kelly was undecided as to the field in which she wanted to work in the Air Force but was thinking about applying for communications. Opportunities available in the Air Force are attracting more and more young women each year, according to Sgt. Davis, and more young ladies than ever before will be able to enlist, he said. Some 6,000 women are now serving on active duty. “By the mid-70s,” Sgt. Davis said, “the Air Force expects to have about 14,000 women wearing the blue uniform.” TO BE PRESENTED THURSDAY Two Walshes Win Racing H onors Last year’s steeplechase champions were honored Thursday at the annual din ner of the National Steeple chase and Hunt Association in the Canfield Casino at Sara toga Springs, N.
