Wednesday, November 5, 1975 THE PILOT—Southern Pines, North Carolina I’:i«c Il-H "4) fi: > i'^ '9 By Abigail Van Buren ® 1«7SbyChle«gaTribun*-N.Y. NmiSynd.. Inc. Widow Kindles SO-Year Flame DEAR ABBY: I want to get married again, but my family is against it. You see, I met this man in 1914. We wanted to get married December of 1915, but our parents said we were too young. (I was 14 and Ruby was 18.) World War I came along and Rudy joined the Navy. Meanwhile I married someone else and spend 54 unhappy years with him. He died three years ago and guess who suddenly came into my life again? Rudy! His wife of 51 years had died, and we discovered the old love was still there. I am now 75, and my children don’t want me to get married because they’re afraid they’ll lose my monthly checks. I’m sure Rudy and I can make it together. Please answer soon. FIRST LOVE IN GALVESTON DEAR FIRST: Your family has no right to stand in your way. If you and your first love can “make it together,” the word from here is to tell your family to go jump into the Gulf of Mexico and for you to marry Rudy. Life is short. Make it sweet. DEAR ABBY: I’m going with a terrific guy. He has everything a girl could want in a man. Looks, personality, character and money. So, what’s my problem, you ask? He’s a wet kisser! I hate to mention this to him because I don’t want to hurt his feelings, but if it weren’t for those wet kisses, he would be perfect. Please help. GEMINI DEAR GEMINI: So what’s wrong with telling him to dry up? DEAR ABBY:,Please tell the next reader who asks what to do about a flooded basement to call the fire department. We help in any emergency not involving a crime: sudden illness from simple fainting to heart attacks; accidents from falling out of bed to auto collisions; electrical power failure (anything from a blown fuse to a high voltage wire that could be very dangerous). We give emergency aid and call an ambulance, doctor or any other agency as required. We’ll even come out and check your home to make sure it’s fireproof. Please spread the word, Abby. We want to help. FRIENDLY FIREMAN SUN CITY, CALIF. DEAR FIREMAN: I’ll spread the word. The printed word reaches more people than smoke signals. DEAR ABBY: This is for “Ticked off in Tulsa” whose husband always told departing dinner guests to come back soon because he never got a decent meal unless they had company: If that’s all she has to complain about, she's lucky. My husband always makes jokes about what a lousy bed partner I pipi. His favorite joke is: “If a man ever rapes my wife, he could never be charged with a moving violation.” TICKED OFF IN, TACOMA DEAR ABBY: Would you believe the following conversation? Checkout girl in supermarket: “I attend nursing school at the university and work here part-time. So far I’ve made all As.” Customer (who is dressed in a nurse’s uniform): “I don’t see why you’re going into nursing when you have a high-paying job like this.” C.G.: “What do you mean? I hear you nurses make $1,000 a month to start.” Nurse Customer: “Here’s my check stub. See if you don’t make more than I do after 17 years as a nurse.” C.G.: “Why, you’re absolutely right! I make $2 an hour more than you do.” Abby, you can bet one thing. Nursing lost another bright young mind. Nurses here make $3.50 an hour, and checkout girls make $5.50. EAST OHIO DOCTOR DEAR DOCTOR: If nursing lost this “bright young mind” to the supermarket checkout counter, nursing hasn’t lost much. DEAR ABBY: I am a grown man, college educated and successful in my work. My problem is that I have a horror of flying. Yes. I’ve tried it, and I die a thousand deaths. —LEGAL NOTICE- NOTICE OF REGULAR ELECTION FOR MEMBERS OF THE VILLAGE COUNCIL PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA Notice is hereby given that the regular election for three (3) members of the Village Council of Pinehurst, North Carolina, will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 1976. Homer Qerk, Pinehurst , Village Council 10:15,22,29,11:5c Please don’t tell me to see a psychiatrist. I’d rather drive, take a bus or stay home. FIFTY AND FRIGHTENED DEAR FRIGHTENED: Don’t be an old “phoby.” Phone an airline office and ask if they have (or know of) the program offered to people who are afraid to fly. I understand such a course is available, and it’s highly successful. Happy landing! DEAR ABBY: In response to that 52-year-old woman who is going with a 34-year-old man. She's afraid her children and others wijl think she’s making a fool of herself. She’s also afraid people might think she is his mother. I am 51, and I’ve been going with a very handsome, 28-year-old man for over two years. Doyle and I don’t care if someone mistakes me for his mother. After all, I am 23 years older than Doyle and that’s old enough to be his mother. The day I stopped worrying about what other people thought I started living. I have a son who is older than Doyle, and he says, “Mom, anything that makes you happy is just fine with me.” If people limited their friends to their own age group, they’d miss a lot of fun. I say, enjoy what you have while you have it. It will all be gone too soon. CALIFORNIAN DEAR CAL: I’m with you! DEAR ABBY: How does one address a congratulatory telegram to newlyweds who are retaining their individual surnames? Western Union couldn’t give me an answer. UNCLE CLIFF DEAR UNCLE: “Congratulations to Mary Smith and John Jones on your marriage.” DEAR ABBY: In response to the mother-to-be who asked whether some people were uncomfortable in the presence of a woman who was breast-feeding her baby in public, I would like to post a definite YES! A woman’s bare breast is a bare breast, whether it’s exposed to nurse a baby or displayed for sexual titillation ’There is no excuse for a mother’s nursing her baby in public. She can always find a rest room.
