Eclipse
Of Sun
On Oct. 12
A solar eclipse can be seen in
North Carolina on Oct. 12.
On Tuesday, the Harvest Moon
V in the early morning was lightly
shrouded by the edge of the
earth’s shadow and on Oct. 12 the
sun will be eclipsed as the new
moon moves between the earth
and the sun, reports Jim
Manning, assistant director of
the Morehead Planetarium at the
’ University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill.
On Wednesday, Oct. 12, North
, Carolinians will witness a partial
eclipse of the sun beginning at
4:30 p.m. and lasting until 6 p.m.
Manning warned against looking
directly at the sun to view the
eclipse because of the risk of eye
damage. The total eclipse will be
visible only in a thin band across
the Pacific Ocean and
northeastern South America, he
said.
^ Solar eclipses occur at the time
of the new moon, when the moon
is between the earth and the sun.
Lunar eclipses occur during the
full moon, when the earth lies
between the sun and the moon.
“The phenomenon does not
occur at every full and new
moon,’” he said, “because the
moon’s orbit is tilted with respect
^ to the plane of the earth’s orbit.
Therefore, the moon does not
usually form an exact enough
line with the sun arid earth to
produce an eclipse.”
There are, he said, two points
of intersection between the
moon’s orbit and the earth’s
orbital plane. These points are
called nodes and are located on
opposite sides of the earth.
The sun, moon and nodes line
up twice a year at six month
intervals. These two periods are
known as “eclipse seasons”
because when the moon passes
through a node, the three bodies
form an exact or nearly exact
line and an eclipse takes place.
Eclipses happen in pairs at
these times because it takes the
moon only two weeks to travel
, from one node to the other.
Manning said.
“For example, if the moon is
at the node between the earth
and sun, a solar eclipse occurs.
In two weeks the moon will be at
the oppo^i spsje,
alignmenHs sM gdra enough,
the moon will pass through the
earth’s shadow in lunar eclipse.”
The eclipses in a pair can occur
i in either order. This autumn, the
^ lunar eclipse precedes the solar
by two weeks. Last October and
November the reverse was true.
Firm Offering
New Shades
f* Fashions Here
A new collection of woven wood
shades, one of the “hottest”
items in window fashions today,
is being introduced at the
Sherwin-Williams Decorating
Center in Southern Pines.
Called Perfect Touch, the new
collection features 30 patterns
designed exclusively for
I -j) Sherwin-Williams by Delmar.
i “This new line combines earth
j tones and natural yarns with
warm woods,” says Raymond
I Hoover Hannah, manager of the
Decorating Center at 705 S. West
I Broad St. “Overall and open-
I weave patterns give window
1 fashions a handcrafted look —
perfect for today’s natural trend
in home furnishings.”
I.*) To introduce the new woven
] woods collection, Hannah says
: Sherwin-Williams will offer
one-third off on every Perfect
Touch pattern purchased up to
Oct. 31.
Hannah explains that the
Perfect Touch collection is based
on the most popular styles and
^ colors in Sherwin-Williams’Style
Perfect carpeting line.
“Carpeting is a major
investment, often the first
purchase made by people
decorating their homes,”
Hannah says. “With Perfect
Touch complementing our carpet
offerings, a color-coordinated
and balanced window-floor decor
can easily be achieved.”
NEW OSHA FORMS
OSHA will be in much better
“form” with Tar Heel
employers, crane Jan. 1,1978. On
that date, the old OSHA Forms
Nos. 100 and 102 will be
eliminated. Taking their place
wil be the streamlined new OSHA
Form No. 200, which will be
mailed late this year to
employers covered by the
Occupational Safety and Health
Act. The new form uses a greatly
simplified way of logging,
posting and reporting
occupational injuries and
illnesses.
