and then some of what happens
to them when they arrive in the
United States.. They are
scattered all through North
Carolina but the largest group is
in Western North Carolina
because the land is more like that
in Laos.
“They tend to stick together in
groups,” she said. “They are
terribly homesick and most of
them want to eventually go
home.Most of them are doing
well in this country, however,
and very few are on welfare.”
She closed by complimenting
the church on looking after their
sponsored Laotian family so well
and how well they were getting
along.
Miss Webster spends a good
deal of volunteer time helping
the refugees in the
Durham-Chapel Hill area, where
she lives. She helps with their

them. She also teaches them

Bridal Shower
Mary Candace Austin, bride-
elect of April 24, was honored by
her aunt, Mrs. Charles W. Austin
at her home on Saturday
evening, April 18, at 8 p.m.
Upon her arrival. Mi® Austin
was presented with a pink car
nation corsage by the hoste®.
Immediately after the arrival
of all the guests, “Bridal Court”
was called into se®ion, with all
guests acting as witnesses
against the defen®, (the Iffide-
to-be) who testiUed and
presented their verdicts and
opinions. The honoree was found
giulty of making the promi® to
take the Love, Honor and Obey
Pledge. She was sentenced to
slice the Bridal Shower Cake of
three tiers (which had been
cleverly constructed from three
various size cartons) which
contained all the shower activity.
The first layer was the love
layer; here the guests dressed
the Ix-ide. The second layer was
the honor layer; here paper-
pencil games in the ring motif-
the ix-opo®l, pack the luggage
and places to go for the
honeymoon-were enjoyed. The
third layer, the obey , was a
wishing ring mold and here the
guests presented and gave the
bride-to-be their own personal
wishes for luck and happine® for
their life together. After the
wishes the bride was sentenced
to obey the hearts and wishes of
the court and open her gifts,
which was done and
acknowledged by the honoree.
The hostess presented the
bride’s mother, Mrs. E.J. Austin
and the groom’s mother, Mrs.
A. J. Harms a white notebook for
the wedding momentoes of their
daughter and son’s wedding.
Refreshments of punch, cake,
nuts, mints and bridge mix were
served.
“Suede” is the French word
for Sweden. French tailors were
intrigued by the first soft,
napped finish cloth from
Sv^en that re®mbled leather,
so they named it after their
neighbor to the north.
