We spent our wedding night in a very nice motel in Salisbury, N.C., where I thought surely we would con summate our marriage, but she said, “Let’s wait a night or two in case I get pregnant. I don’t want people counting the days and saying we had premarital intercourse.” She put me off that way for a whole month. Then she said, “Plenty of babies are born in the seventh month ■— let’s wait a little longer.” Abby, after putting up with her stalling for three months, I demanded my rights. She refused to go on the pill and rejected my offer to take all the responsibility of pre cautions. To this day, she continues to hold me off with one ridiculous excuse after another. 692-6652 Does your rug or carpet look different now that it has been cleaned? The change is probably due to soil which has been removed revealing clean fibers and pile distor tion. HS?£ll Foot traffic, which causes the majority of soil, also produces a physical change on the face yarns. This physical change on the carpet’s face yams begins im mediately, as pointed out in a report by the Ameri can Carpet Institute’s* Technical Committee, which stated: “. . . changes of appearance due to change of texture without significant fiber loss take place from the start of rug or carpet service.” This means that a change in the pile will take place when the carpeting is subjected to use. (Compare areas protected by furniture with adjacent used areas such as immediately in front of couches or chairs.) It is a normal occurrence to be iexpected, and may be in the form of either pile crushing, fuzzing or “bloom ing” of the tufts. The fiber used in the face yarns, pile density, and the amount of traffic over the carpeting will determine the type and amount of distortion. However, the extent of physical change cannot be determined until soil has been removed. The profes sional cleaner makes every effort to correct distortion during the cleaning process. But in many cases dis tortion has reached a point where it cannot be re turned to even near the original appearance. Homer w BOOK FAIR— The O’Neal Book Fair, sponsored by the school’s Mothers’ Association, came to a finale last week as final sales topped all previous records in the Fair’s six years of existence. The timing of the Book Fair coincided with National Library Week, a week set aside every year to create reading interest. As an added impetus to their reading, O’Neal’s grades K-6 participated in the “Racing to Read” contest. Shown above are Greg Garner, Mark Slominski, Larry Hyatt and Jay Sellers. Morrow, secretary of the N.C. Department of Human Resources. “Parents shouldn’t wait until their children are school age to provide them with this necessary protection.” “In addition to early immunization,” Dr. Morrow added, “parents need to have their doctor check the hearing of their children very early in life to see if there is any defect and if it can be corrected before too much dannage is done. “Families eligible for Medicaid can get a hearing test for their children as part of the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnois and Treatment (EPSDT) program. Others should check with the local health department about speech and hearing clinics operated under the Crippled CMdren’s program,” Dr. Morrow said. The Department of Human Resources provides a number of educational and vocational rehabilitation services for the hearing impaired. Deane Fortune, Division Safety Engineer, Burlington Industries, Inc., Transportation Division, Burlington. I am growing very impatient. What do you suggest? GREENSBORO, N.C. DEAR GREENSBORO: Insist that your reluctant bride see a gynecologist. She is obviously unin formed, frightened and totally unprepared for the physical part of marriage. DEAR ABBY: My very efficient secretary, who had been with me for 12 years, retired recently. After I tried several applicants who were brainless, our daughter sent a 26-year-old former college friend of hers to apply for the position. She was personable, qualified and eager to work, so I hired her. In the past months, she has shown promise of developing into a top-notch secretary. Meanwhile, my wife is furious with my daughter for sending this girl to me and she’s angry with me for hiring her. The reason: The girl is well-endowed and she always goes braless. Good secretaries are hard to find, and I mean to keep this one, short of breaking up my home. Her going braless doesn’t bother me, and besides, I feel it is her business and nobody else’s. What do you think? NO HANKY-PANKY DEAR NO HANKY: Tell your wife to run the house and let you run your office. Better a braless secretary than one who’s brainless. DEAR ABBY: I am a very confused and hurting 14-year- old girl. I became very much attracted to my teacher, who is 28 and divorced. I felt a special kind of love for her, and when I told her so, she looked puzzled and frightened and I could tell she didn’t have any special feelings for me. She didn’t come right out and say so, but I knew that’s how she felt. Abby, she was the only person I could talk to about sex and drugs and boys, but when I told her about my special feelings for her, she turned me off and cut the conversation short. I still have so many questions I need answers to. For one thing, some boys are pressuring me for sex. Should I keep hoping for a special relationship with my teacher, or try to forget my feelings for her? Please help me. HURTING DEAR HURTING: Don’t hope for a “special rela tionship” with your teacher. She turned you off because she sensed your attraction to her and felt threatened by it. You desperately need someone to talk to, so please give your school counselor a chance. A counselor is trained to answer all your questions, and can explain those “special feelings” you have for your teacher. It’s not uncommon for young girls (and boys) to get “crushes” on their teachers. But this, too, shall pass. DEAR ABBY: A former associate of my husband (a married woman) has been in love with him for some time. I found some letters she had written to him. He admitted receiving them but said he never loved her — only liked her — and he was not responsible for what she wrote. He said he never responded to those letters, but it’s hard to believe that she would write such passionate letters without some encouragement. The problem is that although she is no longer associated with him, she visits him regularly at work. I have asked him to tell her there is no future in it for her and that she should quit visiting him. He says to tell her this would be making more of the relationship than exists. I think she is trying to wear him down. What do you think? UPTIGHT IN ENCINO DEAR UPTIGHT: I think by not discoLragtng thtf woman, your husband is encouraging her. And regardless of what he tells you, he is getting some thing he enjoys out of her visits. DEAR READERS: Each year, disappointed mothers send me the verse: “A son is a son until he takes a wife, but a daughter is a daughter all of her life.” My mail constantly reaffirms the fact that one of the most sensitive of all human relations is the one that exists between a woman and her mother-in-law. (There is far more friction between a woman and her husband’s mother than between a man and the mother of his wife.) Recently, I received a letter from a young wife who asked, “Who should sit in front with my husband when we take his mother out for a drive?” I replied, “Out of respect for her age — his mother.” Well, the brickbats started flying from all direc tions. Readers quoted Scripture: “And a man shall leave his father and his mother, and cleave unto his wife.” One mother wrote to remind me that the Ten Commandmwts say, “Thou shalt honor thy mother and thy father” — and it doesn’t say one word about the mother-in-law! You don’t have to be a Dear Abby to know that being a good mother-in-law is one of the most difficult roles in the world. ! Now that I am a mother-in-law, I have resolved to abide by two simple rules: Never offer advice unless it’s asked for. Never ask questions that are none of my business. I am trying earnestly to be the best mother-in-law possible. And I must say that my chances for success are excellent, because for 41 years, I have had a wonderful teacher — my own mother-in-law, Mrs. Jay Phillips. God bless you, Rosie. You are the best!
