Howell-Black Pair Wed In Baptist Ceremony
Velena Gaye Black of
Bunnlevel became the bride of
Edward Nelson Howell of
Conover at 7 p.m. April 4 at
Friendship Baptist Church in
Bunnlevel before the Rev. F.
Jimmy Mize.
The bride is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Daniel
Black Jr. of Bunnlevel and the
bridegroom is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. William Calvin Howell of
725 Barber Road, Southern
Pines.
Musicians for the wedding
were Lorraine Mize, pianist;
Tom Allen, organist; Juanita
Blackman, flutist and Velena
Gaye Black, the bride, who sang
“One Hand, One Heart” from
West Side Story from the
balcony before walking down the
aisle, to be given in marriage by
her father.
The bride wore a candlelight
satin gown of her own design,
featuring a Victorian neckline
with re-embroidered Alencon
lace and pearls. The fitted'
sleeves were accented with
sheer inserts and covered
buttons to the elbows. The back
of the gown was of sheer Alencon
lace with covered buttons
extending past the waist. Re
embroidered Alencon lace
formed a deep V in front and
back below the waist. The gown
featured a cathedral train with
scalloped matching lace forming
the border. The cathedral veil
was of sheer illusion and the
headpiece was adorned with
pearls. She wore a pearl
necklace and earrings. She
carried a bouquet of miniature
candlelight silk roses and ivy
with candlelight ribbons.
Deborah Black, sister of the
bride, of Bunnlevel was maid of
honor. Her dress was also
designed by the bride. The gown

Mrs. Edward Nelson Howell
was ivory with Williamsburg
blue roses, featuring a draped
front and back neckline and
fitted bodice. It fell into soft
gathers and had a matching cord
belt. She carried a candleholder
made by the bridegroom’s
cousin, featuring silk
Wiliamsburg blue and mauve
roses and forget-me-nots with a
globe and cranberry tapers with
velvet ribbons.
Bridesmaids were Teresa
Black, sister of the bride, of
Coats; Annette Phillips, sister of
the groom of Burlington; Sheila
Core of Durham; Becky Sturgill,
Lillington; Juanita Blackman,
Buies Creek and Iva Core, aunt
of the bride of Durham,
honorary bridesmaid. They were
dressed the same as the honor
maid, and carried the same
kinds of flowers.
Melissa Black was flower girl
and Daniel Howell, ringbearer.
William Calvin Howell was
best man for his son. Ushers
were Greg Black, brother of the
bride, of Bunnlevel; Ken Howell,
brother of the groom, of
Southern Pines; Bobby Balboni
of Southern Pines; Mike
Schlagenhauser, Lillin^on, and
Johnny Greene, Fort Mill, S.C.
A reception followed in the
fellowship hall of the church
before the couple left for a
honeymoon to Orlando, Fla.
At the reception, a three
tiered wedding cake featured a
three-tiered water fountain
inside. Also served were cheese
straws, handmade mints, nuts, a
vegetable tray with dip Swedish
meatballs and punch. Mrs. Jean

Saturday
Miss Denise Eloyce Henderson,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willie
Henderson of Carthage, became
the bride of Mr. Michael
Theodore Sturdivant, son of Dan
ny Sturdivant of Southern Pines,
on May 2, at 9 o’clock in the morn
ing. I^obate Judge Newton of
ficiated at the double-ring
ceremony.
The bride wore a knee-length
baby-blue dress with a white cor
sage. The groom wore a light blue
suit with a white carnation.
The bride chose as her maid of
honor Miss Gwen Wilkerson of
Southern Pines. She wore a knee-
length dress of white and wore a
white corsage.
The groom had as his best man,
Robert Robinson of Southern
Pines. He wore a beige suit wiUi a
white boutonniere.
Following the ceremony, Mr.
and Mrs. Sturdivant entertained
at a reception at the Cardinal
Club in Pinebluff at which over 50
guests were present. The room
was decorated with the tradi
tional wedding motif.
Music for the reception was by
Jeffery Capel.
The couple will live in Southern
Pines.
The bride was honored at a
shower May 2, in the Cafeteria at
Moore Memorial Hospital.
The shower was given by the
Dietary Department of the
hospital. Assisting at the shower
was Mrs. Katie Badgett, and the
refreshment table was decorated
for the occasion. Punch and
cookies were served. She receiv
ed many gifts.
Vanilla is still the favorite
ice cream flavor in this
country.
Jemigan, Mrs. Kay McConnell,
Mrs. Joyce Williams and Mrs.
Margaret Howell assisted in
serving, as aunts of the couple.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Core, the
bride’s aunt and uncle,
coordinated the reception.
The rehearsal dinner was
hosted by Mr. and Mrs. David
Lockamy, Mr. and Mrs. Glen
Jackson, Brent Jackson and
Larry McLamb at the VFW Post
in Lillington. About 75 guests
were served at the pig-picking.
The couple gave gifts to their
attendants at this party.
The bride was entertained at a
kitchen shower hosted by Mrs.
Annette Phillips and Mrs.
Deborah Howell. It was held at
the home of Mrs. Howell, mother
of the groom. Special guests
included Edna Black, mother of
the bride, Deborah Black, sister
of the bride, and Kaye
McConnell, aunt of the groom.
Approximately 20 guests were
treated to cake squares sausage
balls, nuts, mints and punch.
A miscellaneous shower was
given the bride by Mrs. Audrey
Wicker and Miss Teresa Black,
sister of the bride. It was held at
Mrs. Wicker’s home in Lillington
about 10 guests were present.
The winner was presented a
homemade cheesecake.
The guests were served
blueberry cheesecake,
strawberry cheesecake, tea and
coffee.
Special guests were Mrs. Black
and Mrs. Howell, mothers of the
bride and groom.
A miscellaneous shower for
the bride was hosted by Mrs.
Bobbie and Miss Lorraine Mize,
Mrs. Valeri Smithdeal, Mrs.
Lorraine Hobb, and Mrs. Cheryl
Morris, ladies of the bride’s
church, in Bunnlevel.
Approximately 25 guests were
treated to cake squares,
cheesestraws, sausage balls,
nuts, mints and punch. After
playing several games, the bride
was presented a lamp and shade
by the hostesses. A special guest
was Mrs. Black, mother of the
bride.
A miscellaneous shower was
held for the bride and groom at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elbert
Jemigan, grandparents of the
bride. Hostesses were, Mrs.
Joyce Williams, Mrs. Jean
Jemigan, Mrs. Billie Jemigan,
and Mrs. Iva Core, aunts of the
bride. Approximately 40
relatives enjoyed cake squares,
nuts, mints and punch.
Gaye and Eddie were
presented a five piece place
setting in their fine china by the
hostesses.
A bridesmaids luncheon was
hosted by the Misses Teresa and
Deborah Black at the home of
Miss Teresa Black in Coats. The
guests were served baked ham
with pineapple rings, string
beans, salad, iced tea and
dessert.
The bride was presented a
peignoir set by the hostesses.
Special guests were Mrs.
Black and Mrs. Howell, mothers
of the bride and groom.
Keno Jets
The Keno Jets gathered for
their May meeting at the home of
Mrs. Thomasina Murphy Satur
day evening.
President Mrs. Peggy Chavis
presided over the meeting. The
highlight for the evening was
plans for the “Lil Abner Again.”
After 12 games the hostess
served refreshments, and club
prizes were given to Mrs. Rosetta
Nelson.
The club members were happy
to have former member Mrs.
June Monroe return to the Keno
Jets.
There will be a call meeting
May 23 at the home of Mrs. Peggy
Chavis. The next regular
meeting will be June 6, with Mrs.
June Monroe as hostess. Watch
for more news about “Lil Abner
Again.”
LEGION AUXILIARY
Mrs. Francis Dwight, 2222 N.
May St., Southern Pines, will be
hostess for the May meeting of
the American Legion Auxiliary,
Unit 134, on Thursday, May 14 at
2:30 p.m. All members and their
