On the side of the moon that is visible from the Earth there are an estimated 30,000 craters that are large enough to be identified as such. Since objects on the moon which are smaller than one quarter mile in diameter which are not visible, there must be more craters there that we cannot see. The largest crater on the moon is actually so large that it probably should be designated as a walled plain. It is named Clavius and is located about one third the distance from the south pole of the moon to its equator. It is about 160 miles in diameter. The smallest crater on the moon must be one that we cannot see. Markings down to about y* mile in diameter are not visible through telescopes. There are probably thousands that we cannot see. The smallest conspicuous crater may be Linne, which is about two miles in diameter. The deepest crater on the moon is named Newton. It is a ^ very small crater lying near the south pole of the moon. Its walls rise 29,000 feet above the inside surface of the crater. It is so deep that the center is always in the shadow of these walls. The two most conspicuous craters on the moon are Tycho and Copernicus. Tycho was named after Tycho Brahe, the great Danish astronomer. It lies in the southern part of the moon beyond the edge of Mare Nubium. It is surrounded by craters and a very rough lunar surface. It is very bright and has a tremendous system of rays that extend out from its edge for hundreds of miles in all directions. Copernicus is located a little east of the central line of the moon. It is about the same MOLUARoJounson’S ■KNmsr »2.$9 r ■Ill 1st: two eggs, any style. iliiiilliji i:./ 2nd: two sausage patties. 3rd: two flufly light hotcakes. 4th: two crisp bacon strips.
