Graham Wins Pro Drag Race
BY JIM KIRKPATRICK
It was a perfect day for the
Winston Pro-Am National Drag
Races at Rockingham Sunday.
Skies were clear and the wind
was minimal. The odors of
burning methane fuel and rubber
hung in the air.
Marvin Graham of Alhambra,
Calif, took the Pro Dragster title
from Mark Oswald, running the
quarter of a mile in a scorching
5.843 seconds, and crossing the
finish line doing 238.09 mph.
Oswald was only eight-hundreds
of a second behind Graham at
5.851 seconds, going faster at the
finish with 246.57 mph.
The real action was in the
Funny Car runs with a
mandatory re-run in the semi
finals due to a Christmas Tree
malfunction. Only one yellow
light and then the green light is
flashed for the Pro classes. In
the semi-finals with Kenny
Bernstein in the Budweiser King

Foxfire Ladies
BY ANNE WALSH
The month of April provided
members of the Foxfire Ladies’
Golf Association the opportunity
to participate in five weekly
events, qualifying and match
play for the first major
tournament of the season, and
the opening mixed event.
Individual stroke play with
low gross and low net prizes
a\varded after using full
handicap was the game of the
day on Wednesday, April 1. In the
low gross category Mrs. Paul
Lamonde captured first while
Mrs. George Anderson took
second and Mrs. Carl Schroeder
placed third. Those golfers
placing first, second and third for
low net scores were Mrs. Eustis
Rawcliffe, Mrs. Charles Elliott
and Mrs. Roy Weber.
April 8 was a team effort with
the best two balls of the foursome
being used for scoring. The
winning combination of Mrs.
George Anderson, Mrs. Charles
Elliott, Mrs. Harold Mosher and
Mrs. David Sullivan posted a 117.
Coming in second with a 119 were
Mrs. Marchand Blatchley, Mrs.
Reginald Gildner, Mrs. Forrest
Palmer and Mrs. Harvie Ward.
Placing third with a 122 was the
foursome of Mrs. William Tate,
Mrs. Bob Shea, Mrs. James Wise
and Mrs. Darwin Larson.
Strokes on just the even holes
were what mattered on April 15
as winners were determined
after using 50 percent of
handicap. Tied for first place
were Mrs. Charles Kerber, Mrs.
Justice Walsh, and Mrs. Richard
Lacher. All alone in second was
Mrs. Wilbur Bicknase while four
members tied for third: Mrs.
Bob Shea, Mrs. Carl Schroeder,
Mrs. Robert Weis and Mrs.
Richard Biggins.
Members had the choice on
April 22 either to qualify for the
Jean DeGhuee Tournament or to
enter the weekly event which
was low gross and low net stroke
play. Those qualifiers then faced
three weeks of match play before
the 1981 champion will emerge.
In the regular weekly event,
Qass “A” results showed Mrs.
Charles Kerber the low gross
winner and Mrs. Roy Weber
winning low net. In Class “B”
Mrs. Marvin Taylor captured
low gross as Mrs. Reginald
Gildner took low net. The Class
“C” low gross winner was Mrs.
Bob Shea while Mrs. Richard
Biggins won low net.
Low putts determined the
winners of the day on April 29.
Mrs. Chris Hopkins won this
event while Mrs. Robert F.
Murphy took second. Tied for
third were Mrs. John Purdum,
Mrs. Walter Dyer and Mrs.
Justin Walsh. Mrs. Marchand
Blatchley and Mrs. Paul
Lamonde tied for fourth.
For the first Guys and Dolls
mixed tournament of this season,
seventeen foursomes teed off on
Sunday, April 26, with the game
of the day being Captain’s
Choice. After cocktails and an
Italian dinner for seventy-two at
the clubhouse, gift certificates
from the pro shop were awarded
to the winning foursomes.
Captain Ward Clark’s winning
team of Mrs. William Hess, Mrs.
Justin Walsh and Dick Biggins
posted a one under par score of
71, the only foursome of the
seventeen to break par on
Foxfire’s challenging new East
Course. Four teams tied with an
even par 72, so a match of cards
was required. Placing second
after that match was Captain
George Anderson’s team of Mrs.
Joseph Henrici, Mrs. Robert
Robertson and Lars Larson.
Third place was awarded to
Captain Jud Walsh’s team of
Mrs. Donald Brewer, Mrs.
Walter Dyer and Bill Clark.
Captain Abe Cooperman’s team
of Mrs. Russell Adams, Mrs.
Richard Biggins and Boyd
Anderson placed fourth.
Losing out completely on any
prize after the match was
Captain Chris Hopkins’ team of
Mrs. Forrest Paliner, Mrs. John
Purdum and Russ Adams.
Co-hosts for this Guys and Dolls
were Mr. and Mrs. Roger Elton
and Mr. and Mrs. Darwin
Larson. Roger Elton is
chairman of the Men’s Golf
Committee this year while Mrs.
Larson is chairman of the
Foxfire Ladies’ Golf Association.
