Provided by the Council on Ministries, the service was centered around the relationship of the family in the church experience. Among other church members, Pat Nurnberg, Ann Jessup and Jackie Chrismon shared per sonal experiences, pointing out the importance and value of worship within the family unit. Mrs. Nurnberg related the joy and comfort of finding her family at the airport awaiting her arrival home after being overseas. Mrs. Jessup shared her memories of family devotion held during hk childhood in 1949 at mealtime. She also showed a devotion book. Mrs. Chrismon told of the special devotion and prayer time in her home as a child. The special service was held in celebration of National Family Week, May 3-10. Flowers were placed in the Vass United Methodist Church Sunday, April 26, in loving memory of Mr. John S. Caddell by his children. Moore County Methodist Ministers and wives met on Sunday evening, April 26, at the Golden Corral in Aberdeen for dinner, a business meeting and fellowship. The Rev. Franklin Grill of the Southern Pines Methodist Church presented the evening program, concerning the history and background of the Methodist churches in Moore County. Attending from the Vass United Methodist Church was the Rev. Harold Chrismon. The Rev. Harold Chrismon was guest minister of the Rev. Tom Holtsclaw and the Tabernacle Methodist Church in Robbins for a Weekend Revival May 1, 2 and 3. During the absence of Mr. Chrismon, Mr. Samuel Hartsell filled the pulpit of the Vass United Methodist Church Sunday morning. Mr. Hartsell is Maintenance Supervisor of the Moore County Schools and a Representative of Gideons International. Accompanying Mr. Hartsell was his wife. TTie Hartsells are members of the Taylor Memorial Baptist Church in the Roseland community. The Administrative Board of the Vass United Methodist Church met on Sunday evening. May 3, in the church Fellowship Hall. The general business meeting, which was chaired by Tommy Jessup, was well attended. Presbyterians Youth of the Vass Presbyterian Church will meet Wednesday night at the church to begin a four week Confirmation Class. The Bible study will be held this Thursday at the Manly Presbyterian Church beginning at seven thirty. Baptists Girls and leaders from the Baptist Church attending the Girl Scout Camporee over the past weekend were; Misses Lisa, Pam and Donna Johnson, Linda Johnson, Jennifer and Barbara Koonce, Susan Frye and Joanna Crissman. A Baptismal service is scheduled for Sunday night. May 10 at the First Baptist Church of Vass, beginning at seven o’clock. Church of God Filling the pulpit Sunday, during the morning worship in the absence of the Rev. Larry May was the Rev. Lloyd Ferguson. Mr. Ferguson is a retired minister from West Virginia. Mr. Ferguson and members of the Vass Church of God gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. P.T. Smith on Monday night for a cottage prayer meeting service. Sick and Hospitalized Lou Layton broke his leg and was confined at Moore Memorial Hospital from Thursday until Saturday. Lou, who broke his leg at the Vass Park Thursday night playing softball, expects to be in a cast for eight months. However, he says he doesn’t expect the cast to interfere with his Chorus classes at Union Pines. Tony Germann, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Germann, was hospitalized last Thursday at Moore Memorial with pneumonia. He was allowed to return home on Sunday. Mrs. Pauline Kimball returned home on Saturday after spending two weeks at Moore Memorial, having suffered a heart attack. The Rev. Larry May was also hospitalized at Moore Memorial last week undergoing tests, but he was hopeful to return home sometime this week. Happy Birthday Happy birthday this week to Tim Buie who celebrated a birthday Tuesday, May 5 and also to Ted Rosser who celebrated a birthday Monday, May 4. Kids Krusade The Sandhills Assembly on US Highway One South invites children of the Vass community to attend a Kids Krusade May 10 through May 14. Conducted by Aunt Jo and her helpers, the Krusade will employ puppets and clowns in a circus theme. Prizes will be awarded lucky kids. The Krusade will begin promptly at seven o’clock and end promptly at eight thirty. Transportation will be provided for those who wish to go but have no way. For transportation call 692-2403. Vass Woman’s Club The Vass Woman’s Club will hold their May meeting Friday evening. May 8, at the home of Mrs. S.R. Smith. The Arts Department under the direction of Chairman Marilyn Gschwind wiU present the program. Interested ladies are invited. In, Out and Through Town The Rev. and Mrs. Harold Chrismon had as their guests Sunday, April 26, Mr. and Mrs. Hansford Gentry of Laurinburg. Guests at the home of Mrs. Pauline Frye over the weekend were Mrs. Edith Rabom and Mrs. Frances Mashburn of Aiken, S.C., Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Dowdy of Sanford and the Dowdy’s daughter, Elaine Thomas, and her family of Goldston. On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Frye and daughter, Gwen, joined the group for a family dinner at Mrs. Frye’s home. Out-of-towners were in abundance Sunday afternoon as they gathered for the annual Gschwind Reunion held at the Vass Fire Station. Mrs. Raymond Mclean had as her weekend guest Mrs. Allie Hall, then on Sunday afternoon she had a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Obie McLean of Erwin and Mrs. Evelyn Scarboro of Vass. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Cooper returned home on Saturday from Smithfield, Georgia, where they spent a most enjoyable week with Mr. and Mrs. Cooper’s families. Friends of Melinda Cooper are pleased to have her back home in Lakeview after workbig some time in Atlanta, Georgia. She will be home on vacation for the summer. Then in August she will be going to the East Coast Bible College in Charlotte. Mr. and Mrs. Bobbie Cox Sr. of Qay Road Farm had as their guests over the weekend their son, Bobbie Jr., and his wife, Mary Ellen, of Raleigh. Visiting with Mr. and Mrs. P.T. Smith over the weekend were Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Smith and their daughters, Barbara and Jeffrey, of Chester, Va. Also on Sunday the Smiths enjoyed visits from Mr. and Mrs. Larry Smith and daughters, Lynn and Michelle, of Greensboro, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Lisenby of Wadesboro and Mrs. Maggie Wallace and her granddaughter, Nancy, of Pinehurst. Girl Scouts Vass Girl Scouts enjoyed an exciting weekend at the annual Girl Scout Camporee held at Camp Reeves. Peggy Deak, Senior Girl Scout Leader from Troop 912, served as Camporee Director; while Senior Scout, Lisa Johnson, served as Assistant Camporee Director. Other Senior Scouts from Ms. Deak’s troop attending were Carol Sawyer and Rosemary Janecki. Attending from Vass Girl Scout Cadet Troop 11 were Leader Linda Johnson, Assistant Leader, Donna Johnson, and scouts, Renee Hodges, C^thia Fairley, Andrea Elliott, Beth Wood, Wendy Apple, Pam Johnson, Gaye Hennings and Alea Spaulding. Cadet Troop 11 was honored to perform the Scouts own service Sunday morning. Also attending the Camporee was Junior Troop 005 with Co-Leader, Carolyn Steed and Assistant Leader Kris Jerrett. A man driving a moped was struck head-on by a car AprU 25, on Mechanic Street, and was taken to Moore Memorial Hosiutal by ambulance where he was treated and released, police reported. Michael A. Baker, 19, Raeford, was traveling south on Mechanic Street, and Walter Frye, 52, 1395 W. Michigan Ave. was traveling north on Mechanic Street, driving a moped, when Baker topped the crest of the hill, driving in the wrong lane of traffic, according to the police report by Patrolman Ronnie R. Atkins. The collision caused an estimated $260 in damages to the moped, and about $150 damage to the Baker vehicle. Jackson Springs News Baker was charged driving left of center. with Michael Anthony Bryant, 20, Kinston, was charged with failure to see before turning when he made a U-turn at the intersection of Iowa Avenue and S. Henley Street Wednesday, and turned into the path of an on coming car driven by Tina Alicia Leslie, 17, of Aberdeen. There were no injuries in the accident, but estimated damages to both vehicles were over $1,000. Patrolman Malcolm A. Mills investigated the accident.
