Wednesday, June 10, 1981 THE PILOT-Soutiiern Pines, North Carolina Page 11-C^ if Van Winkle Takes Lead For Moore Qualifying Joe Van Winkle, local golf sales representative, fired nines of 37-34-71 to take the early lead in qualifying for the Annual Moore Golf Championship held at Seven Lakes Country Qub this summer. Van Winkle played con sistently off the tees and over came early putting trouble when he three-putted twice in the first seven holes. Two long wood shots to the par five eighth hole and a two-putt for a birdie turned the game around. An eight foot birdie putt at the long 11th and a three-footer at the water-surrounded 14th put him one under for the round. Other low scorers were: Bobby Corfce, Pinehurst, 75; Marvin Hole-In-One Dr. Joe Hughes, of Pinehurst, shot his first hole-in-one Sunday morning on the number five hole of the Pinehurst No. 1 course. Hughes sunk the 160-yard ace with a five wood, in the company of his wife, Mary Ellen and Mr. and Mrs. Peter Snyder.. There is still time to enter and qualify for the tournament. Chairman Charlie Rose said. There are now 112 entered in the tournament that lasts all sum mer, and 300 total players are expected. Players have through Sunday to play qualifying rounds, and they will be flirted after all qualifying rounds are through. To enter call Seven Lakes Country Club. Klug finished fourth overall and was top in the 29-38 age group, scoring a 73-72-71-216, just five shots behind winner Phil Bland of Troy. Hundley was second in the 39-48 year category, tying for 10th overall with his score of 223. Winner Phil Bland tied the tournament record, finishing with a 54-hole total of 211. His final round was 68, which includ ed an eagle on the 511-yard, par- five third hole, and bir^es at the 15th and 18th holes, putting him two strokes ahead of Dale Fuller of Clayton who had been tied with Bland after 16 holes. Fuller’s bogey at the 172-yard, par-three 17th, however, set him back into second. In the first game Ren Elec tronics scored 18 to 14 points in the 3rd and 4th innings, respec tively, to win in the hour time limit. Leading hitters were for R. Electronics: D. Wilbom, 4-for-5, double & home run; B. Martin, 4-for-6, double; P. Smith, 4-fQr-5, triple and 2 home runs; J. Williams, 3-for-4, double and home run. For Penick Home; Harrington, l-for-3 and White l-for-3. The second game saw Ren Electronics score 12 runs in the bottom of the second inning to pull away and win in the five inn ings. Top hitters were for Ren Elec tronics: M. Smith, 4-for-4, 2 doubles and a home run; C. Wilbom, 3-for-4, 2 home runs; T. Martin, 3-for-4, home run; C. Mills, 3-for-3. For Penick Home: White, McLeod, and Harrington all went l-for-3. Crawford and Foster went l-for-2. June 3-Playing its second double-header of the week, Ren Electronics rolled to two vic tories over Pugh’s Quasi Club, 14-0 and 19-6. C. Williams pitched the first game shutout giving up only 3 hits. Sandblasters Following their monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 2, the Sandblasters of Knollwood Fairways took to the course at Midland Farms Country Club for a 9 hole tournament involving 3- man teams. Captain’s Choice was the game played. First place winners with a net score of 25 were Price Brookfield, A1 Koppe and Moe Miller. Two teams were tried for second, with a net score of 27. They included Norm Ellis, A1 COON HUNT The Toisnot Swamp Coon Hunters Club announced today that a Cystic Fibrosis Benefit Hunt will be conducted by their organization on Saturday, August 15. The hunt is sanctioned by the United Kennel Club. Trophies and ribbons will be awarded in the hunt and in other activities which include a bench show, drag races, water races and a treeing contest. The Cystic Fibrosis Benefit Hunt will take place at the Toisnot Swamp Coon Hunters Club which is just off Highway 42 West near Wilson. Cronk, Hoss Verwohlt, and A1 Schaefer, Jack Kullinan and John Dzomi. Third place went to Nels Apling, Bill Shamblin and Dana. Smith with a net score of 28. Finishing fourth were Keii; Gibson, Cletus Darnell and Doii Bjurstrom. Their net score was 29. There will be no monthly-, meetings in July and August, but tournament play as posted will continue as usual on Tuesdays. The members of the winning team with a net best ball of 53 were Bruce Wiesley, Elga Winans, Clarice Strain and Fred Van Sant. The award for closest to the pin on No. 14 went to Sara Welliver and on No. 5 to Walter Schreiner. Following the tournament a buffet supper was served at poolside. Chairmen for the event were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Strain with a committee of Mr. and Mrs. Frederic Crist, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Garber and Mr. and Mrs. John Ramey.
