It "was our pleasure to attefid aspiri ted debate at Watwosth High School Saturday night, the question under con sideration being "Prohibition." A large crowd of the elite ot the neighborhood had gathered at early canofle light to hear the boys" give vent to their eloquence, and they did not go away unintertained, the speeches ware all good, and showed that the speakers had thoroughly, studied tie question under consideration. Whilst we do not wish to be uuderstood as being partial, we must say that the speech of Mr. 0. M. Radford, the Principal of the school Was one of the best we have ever heard on tin subject. He spoke in behalf of Pro hibition. He" spoke in one cf his happiest strains, slowing the evil effects of the de mon strong drink in its true colors. Tie was loudly applauded when he took his scat; it was evident that he had convinced ev. n th"3 orpK n s of prohibition, and bis eloquent discussion of measures and of so called "policy" were sustained, in subse quent addresses, bv his misted Lieutenants Messrs. Eldridge Leo. I E'dridge and Johnston completely vanquished his oppo nents, although Messrs T T Lee J W Wood T J Johnston, and Summeriin made a brilliant fight against what tbby claimed to be sumptuary Iegis-lation, and which in their view was subversive of the spirit of Constitutional law. The'Judges decided in favor of Prohib ition, the audience "evidently were satis fied with the verdict, and the Herald man left the school bouse, ' pleased with the acCion of , tha umpires, and more than pler.sed to accipt theho?pitality of Mr 15 Lee and his "better half." I will give you a few out lines ot a trial: the wif of James R Meei apporr d before J B Harder, J. P., in I leasant Grove township, and swore out a writ for fornication and adultry. John Stephenson was called t his assistance to try the case; to hear the poor woman tell the ruff treatment that she had received from her husband and his corquebine and the wicked threats that be had made to her it would almost cause the tears to flowfrom the eyes of the most hard hartcd: after living with her for . some time he eloped with her, being gene five days, re turned to hi home, stating that they had been bound in the bonds of matrimony. Whenthe decision of the court was read to them that they had to give a two hun dred dollar bond aaeh or go to the iron clad hotel,. their joys fled and more pecially when the constable told them to make ready for the trip to the place of safety. I saw an article in last week's Heral recommendine a work hous in thiaconnty for just such characters; a thing that think that every good citizen of Johnston eennty should encourage. Happt Fahmfe.
