Some few weeks past I saw a let
ter printed in your paper, written
b.v Mr. Alalcom McKinne, Princeton,
N. C., advocating Mr. C. N. Parker
for County Treasurer. I understand
Mr. Parker spent several years of
Ms life in Boon Hill Township, and
during his stay there, he made
friends, not enemies. Now, Mr. Mc
Kinne claims Mr. Parker a citizen
of Boon Hill township, and as Boon
Hill has not had a candidate before
Ihe people for any office for 12 or
li years, I feel that Boon Hill towu
eblp Is entitled to some recognition.
Further: I don't think any one would
be foolish enough to claim that Sel

While noticing the columns of
your paper, I see the names of sev
eral distinguished gentlemen of the
?county mentioned as candidates for
the different county offices.
Please allow me enough space In

panie of a man for sheriff. The man

I shall name needs no introduction In
Johnston County. He has served the
people In the House and the Senate.
He Is a true blue Democrat and has
been one of the leaders in the party
for several years. He is a man who
if nominated would make us a good
campaign and would win votes for
the whole ticket. A man who has
been a very successful business man
in the town of Selma for the past
ten years. He is an honest, upright
gentleman. Everybodys' friend, and
refuses none who ask him for a fa
vor. If we nominate him for sher
iff there Is not a doubt that he will
add much strength to the ticket and
leild in the victory. So let us all
go to Smithfleld on the 3rd day of
August determined to nominate the
strongest and best men in the coun
ty and nominate Clarence W. Rich
ardson for sheriff, and we will make

his farm near Smithfleld and came
there in 1896. He was born in this
county in August, 1870. He is 6 ft.
4 in. tall, big shouldered and well
backboned, weighs about 190 lbs. and
would make an officer of whom the
citizens of Johnston County will be
proud. Nominate htm and you add
strength to the ticket. His neigh
bors are for him and of that fact he
is very proud. He is a progressive
farmer and believes in good roads,
better farms, better conditions, good
schools, etc. You nominate him
and If the Republicans "back step,*'
he will "broad shuffle."

To the Democratic voters of John
ston County:
I don't know of a time in several
years when Johnston County needed
her best talent more than she does
now to represent Johnston County in
the next Legislature. To fill this
place we need men of the highest
character, men who are noble, men
who represent the rights of the
masses of the people more than they
do a few ring leaders, men who re
gard their political promises as sa
cred as they do a financial obligation.
Now It is the duty of the Demo- j
cratic Convention to nominate Rep
resentatives to the next Legislature
who are known to be absolutely true
to their promises and obligations,
who cannot be influenced by reward
or from people of selfish motives of
their own.
Now we find such a man in the
person of L. H. Allred, of Selma. If
the Democratic Convention will nom
inate Mr. Allred for the Legislature
it will add a name to the ticket
which will bring out men to vote
the Legisaltive ticket that otherwise
would not. Mr. Allred is a young
man of ability, a lawyer of the high
est type, has few to equal him as
an orator. If he is nominated we
will have a representative that John
ston county will be proud of and our
Legislature will not have but few
men that will equal him and none
his superior.
Help us nominate him on August
3 by acclamation and he will make
one of the best campaigns in the
history of our county.

To the voters of Johnston County:
Next Wednesday, August 3rd, the
Democratic voters of Johnston Coun
ty will assemble in convention to
nominate county officers.
I wish to endorse here the candi
dacy of Mr. A. M. Noble, for Clerk of
the Superior Court.
I have known him from his early
youth and I venture the assertion
that no candidate who comes before
the people at that convention asking
for their support will be better qual
ified to fill the position asked for
than Albert Noble will be for Clerk
of the Superior Court.
He is well educated and has been
a practicing lawyer for 3 years. His/
personal ilfe is clean, and his youth
should not be against him. for he
is old enough to have ambition to
be a man in its fullest scope and
import.
His people have been honored citi
zens of the County for more than a
hundred years.
We have so many worthy young
men in the county that I submit that
it is only just and fair that occasion
ally their political ambitions be re
warded.
Should he be nominated for Clerk
of the Court the writer believes that ,

A Letter From Chairman Richardson.
To the Editor:
Please be kind enough to Indulge
a few lines from me to correct an
erroneous report that Is gaining
some currency in the county regard
ing my conduct as Chairman of the
Democratic Executive Committee of
the County.
I am criticized by some for failing
to call together the executive com
mittee during the last session of the
Legislature to take cognizance of
the repeal of the so-called fee bill.
After a meeting was suggested to
me. I addressed a letter to the sev
eral members of the Committee con
cerning the same, and fourteen of
the fifteen written (the chairman be
ing the sixteenth member* expressly
disapproved calling the members to
gether. I accepted this as a fair In
dex to the general sentiment of the
County, and thereupon declined to
call the executive committee togeth
er.
As to whether I was warranted in
assuming that position, I leave to
the unbiased judgment of the Dem
ocracy of the County.
Again, my name has been mention
ed with more or less frequency in
connection with the nomination for
sheriff, and In response to this I
merely wish to say that I am still
Chairman of the Democratic Execu
tive Committee of the County, and in
that exalted position I am more con
cerned in the solidifying of all forces
and in the selection of a ticket that
will appeal to the masses, than in
the prosecution of my own private in
terests.
What I wish to see above all
things else is a triumph of Democrat
ic principles Instead of men who
enter into friendly rivalry for the
offices. To that end I invite all
Democrats devote themselves with
energy and we will witness steady
gains for the party in November.
I urge all Democrats to attend
their precinct meetings Saturday and
to nominate their best men for town
ship officers. I trust that we may
have a large convention at Smithfield
on the 3rd day of August, and I in
sist that it is the duty of all Dem
ocrats to attend and participate in
the deliberations and transactions of
the Convention, and thereafter sup
port with enthusiasm the nominees of
the militant Democracy of the coun
ty.

Nowell For Sheriff.
To the Editor:
I see several names mentioned In
your paper for sheriff of Johnston
County. R. M. Nowell. our present
sheriff, has made us a good sheriff;
while it is true he has been in poor
health for a year or more, but his
health has improved so much, and
now looks like he is about restored
to his former good heatlh. I, for one
would like to see the people of
Johnston County renominate Nowell.
Nowell wil poll as many votes as
any one we can place before the
