The sociable at Mr. G. B. Smith *
during Christmas week, was the ev
ent of the holidays. A large num
ber of the young people of this
section were in attendance, besides
the crowd was augmented by the
presence of numbers from Smlthfield,
Four Oaks. Clayton, Wilson's Mills
and Garner. The Massengrili Hawl
furnished music during the night and
charmed the large crowd present.
During the evening, oysters was
served. It was a most delightful oc
casion, say all who attended.
Mrs. W. T. Adams and children, of
Smith field, are spending this week
with Mr. and Mrs. F. T. Booker, par
ents of Mrs. Adams.
After spending the holidays at
home, the following havoc returned
to their respective schools: Miss
I.<ena?Booker, to Red Springs; Miss
Eva Yelvington, to Peace Institute;
Miss Mary Tomllnson, to Randolph
Macon College; Mr. Robbie San
ders, to the A. & M. College.
On last Sunday morning Mr. David
Wood, who is preparing himself for
the ministry, delivered his first mes
sage at Shlloh. His subject watt,
"Creation.'' He handled It admir
ably, doing much better than was
cxpected of him. In the pulpit he
appeared cool, thoughtful and spir
itually minded. His gestures were
In taste, his delivery excellent. Dur
ing the delivery of his discourse, It
seemed as if he was depending on
the spirit for guidance. With proper
preparation, Mr. Wood Is destined to
accomplish great good In the work
before him. At the close of his
talk, Rev. Mr. Horrell, the pastor,
delivered a powerful talk on the
subject.
At Oakland last Sunday evening,
the following officers were elected
for this year: F. T. Booker, super
intendent ; C. C. Young, assistant
superintendent; Dr. G. A. MclA?more.
secretary and treasurer; Edward
Booker, Assistant secretary; Misses
Ellie Booker and Irene Coats, or
ganists; teachers, Misses Alice Ed

vington, Messrs. E. 8. Edmundson
and C. C. Young, and Mrs. Lizzie
Johnson. The neighborhood owe
it to these officers and teachers to
aid them In this work, especially

day evening, and encourage the work
ers.
A good deal of cotton is still in
the patch. The weather has been so
cold that It ahs been Impossible to

.Mr. II. T. Garrard, of Norfolk. Va.,
is spending some time at his old
home. He is looking well. In fact,
be ?ays he is enjoying better health
than for many years past. He Is
making Improvements on his farm
near Ix?achburg.
Miss Mary Sanders, one of Smith
field's most accomplished young la
dies, spent several days last week
visiting Miss Mary Booker.
Rumor has It that cupid will play
an important part In thia section at
no distant day.
The building boom continues In
this section. We notice now bull- j
dings going up In every direction.
Mr. O. J. Coats has bought a tract
of land near Mr. W. T. Johnson, and
will soon begin the erection of a
handsome residence on same.
