LEGAL TECHNICALITY SLOWS TRIAL Most lawyers will agree with Judge Daniels that he was compelled to quash the indictment of Police Of ficer Wyatt when it was shown that the boy who drew the names out of the jury box was twelve years of age. The law provides that the names shall be drawn “by a child not more than ten years of age.” Most laymen, in the absence of any suggestion that there was any wrong to defendant himself because of the two year difference, will disagree with the ruling of Judge Daniels. They believe no such technicality should permit the delay of judicial proceedings. They think it more im portant to let the trial proceed than to hold that, because a minor provi sion in the drawing of jurors has been disregarded without injury to the defendant, there is no compelling reason to let a technicality postpone V the trial. Such insistence upon the strict letter of the law causes people to doubt the wisdom of laws and court procedure. In view of this postponement, what is to be done to the county commis sioners guilty of laches ? It cost the county much money to hold courts. The law as to the age of the child is plain as a pikestaff- It seems that this child has been drawing jurors for a long time. Did the commission ers think his age was static or did n’t they think at all? To whom was entrusted the oversight of this im portant duty ? This delay by a simple technical ity should put commissioners of other counties on notice. It may be there are others .unmindful of the law, and it is conceivable that many cases will be postponed by continuances. This debate should cause a deeper study of the method of selecting ju rors. The present system is antiquat ed. Too many unfit men get in the jury box. It should be purged of all except men of approved character and common sense.—News and Ob server. HALF MILLION POUNDS OF POULTRY SHIPPED Goldsboro, July 2.Information secured by the local Chamber of Commerce from the State Division of Markets discloses that during the past six months 464.285 pounds of poultry and 3,151 crates of eggs have been shipped from 31 North Caroli na counties. The value of the poul try, based on an average of 14c per pound, amounts to $111,428 40, and the eggs at 35c per dozen brought $70,147.50. Of this amount Wayne county shipped over forty thousand pounds of poultry, but no shipments of eggs are given in the statistics. Keep your drinking water clean and pure by building a concrete well curb and platform, is the advice of E. R. Raney, extension farm engi neer Figures recently released by the U. S- Department of Agriculture show 2 million pounds less frozen and cured pork on hand than the general ’ This year's corn will probably 1 b^g twice the market price of corn f when sold as pork, say swine exten 1 sion workers of State College.
