R. Smith. The others stand en mi equal footing. During the Examination, se lect Orations were delivered by the following young gentlemen: Laval t B urges, Charles P. Campbell, George Clanton, Richard Rhymes, Richard C. IFebb, William Edmunds, fVade JV. West, Oscar Brit ton Richard II. Lewis were we to form an opinion from the plaudits bestowed on these young gentlemen by a very re spectable audience, we would say, that they received a gene ral and almost indiscriminate approbation. This, however, was their first essay, and we cannot avoid saying, that the exhibitions of II. II. Lewis. R. Rhymes, 0. Britton, W. W. West, and L. Burges, came the nearest to our ideas and taste on the subject of public speaking. Relative to the general con duct of our students, although we have occasionally perceived some aberrations from the line of propriety, and more especial ly on the part of those from whose age and standing we had a right to expect better things, yet, generally speaking, their deportment has merited our ap probation. A few gross irregu larities, however, towards the close of the session, particular ly on the part of those of minor p;radc, little boys of ungoverna ble tempers and refractory dis positions, cannot pass without our most severe and unqualified censure. For the present, we think it best to withhold their names. JThe 4th. Session will commence on Thursday, the Sth of July; and as the under-: signed has always wished to render his Academy an institu tion of public utility, the num ber of students will be limited and select. He therefore feels constrained to say, that no room can be found for youths of in temperate passions, disorderly! habits or swaggering disposi tions. He confesses, however, that to contribute to the im provement and advancement of thejustly emulative, would con stitute the pleasure and pride of his future life. WILLIAM E. WEBB. June 16, 1324. Washington, June IS. The Committee of Investigation have been engaged during the last three days in hearing the testi mony of various individuals, whose connexion with public affairs, with banks, with the Treasury Department, with the Post Office, or intercourse with the prosecutor, Mr. Edwards, was supposed to enable them to disclose any fact relevant to In vestigation Mr. Edwards him self lias been, within that time, much before the Committee, an swering interrogatories or ques tioning witnesses. Amongst several other gentleman exam ined within the last three days, were the Hon. Mr. Benton, of Missouri. Hon. Mr. Noble, of Indiana, Hon. Mr. Cook, of Il linois, and Mr. Ab. Bradley, Assistant Post-master General. We observed also before the Committee yesterday one or two ladies, whose attendance had been required at the in stance of Mr. Edwards, but we did not learn the purport of their testimony. The Commit tee completed the examination of all the witnesses yesterday, unless they shall grant the ap plication of Mr. Edwards to re quest the attendance of the Hon. Kufus King, which we under stood is not probable; so that the Report may be anticipated in a few days. Expecting that all the mate rial evidence will be officially presented to the Public, by the Committee, at the close of its most laborious and fatiguing du ties, we shall avoid any attempt, hv martial representations, to forcstal public opinion upon the subject. Such odious manoeu vres we leave to those prints whose cause, or whose natural propensities, lead to such a course. Nat. Int. Pennsylvania. Craicjora as presi dent, and Albert Gallatin as Vice-President of the United States, held on Wednesday af ternoon, (ICth inst.) at the rountv court house, an Ad dress and Resolutions were a- dopted, and Delegates were ap pointed to attend a Convention which is to be held at Harris burg, on the 9th of August, to form an Electoral Ticket. ib. Economical Government. At the late session of the Legis lature of the state of Rhode-Island, the papers of that state in form us, that "the sum of $400 was allowed to the late Gover nor, and $300 to the late Lieutenant-Governor, for their servi ces during the last year." This allowance, we believe, was not intended as a burlesque upon salaries in general, but as com pensation in full for services rendered. Viewed in this light, it must be admitted, that time and talents are dog-cheap in the Rhode-Island market. It is somewhat remarkable, that the emoluments annexed to public office should be so small in a state which contains upwards of thirty Banks, and in which, therefore, much money must be supposed to circulate. ib. Wm. L. Wolf, who, hot long since, made his escape from the jail of Franklin coun ty, was arrested at Wilmington in this state, on the -10th inst. and committed to the prison of that town. Raleigh Star. Respite. His Excellency the Governor has granted a res prte of thirty days to Negro George, condemned to be exe cuted on Friday, the 23th ult. Elizabeth-City Star. Dividend. The State Bank of North-Carolina declared a di vidend on the 1st inst. of four per cent, on the capital stock of said Bank, lor the half year, payable at Raleigh on the 7th, and at the several branches fifteen days thereafter. JSelo'w Par. The New York Statesman says: North-Caroli na bank notes are quoted in the papers, at 5 to 5! discount. Yet a gang of thieves refused to take them, last week, from a store they robbed, at any rate of exchange Whatever. Bills must be low indeed when they arc not worth stealing. We pre sumc they were only afraid of losing the discount. ed by his step-mother. She was immediately arrested. Netv paper. The prospectus of a new paper, to be published at the City of Washington, enti tled the I'lmcrican Mercury, has just been issued. This pa per will support Henry Clay for the Presidency. Fire. The small frame buil ding on Sycamore-street, near ly opposite the site of Powell's Old Tavern, and occupied by Mr. Firman, on Tuesday night 15th inst. about 10 o'clock, ac cidentally took fire, and was-en-tirely consumed. The house was not insured; and we regret to state, so sudden was the a- larm and so rapid the flames, that the-respectable industrious tenant lost a considerable por tion of his furniture, clothing, &c. Petersburg Int. Cotton. A letter from New Orleans, of the date of May 1C, states that there is a deficiency in the Cotton Crop of last year, compared with that of prece ding years, of tivenly thousand bales. The amouunt of defi ciency, however, considering the vast stock on hand in Eu rope, will not materially affect the market. The Runaways. The Pe tersburg Intelligencer stales that the four negroes, who were ta ken up lately at that place, have been safely lodged in the jail of Gates county, in this state; and that the reward offered for their apprehension, amounting alto gether to the handsome sum of Si 200, was promptly paid down and divided tied to receive it. am oris those enti- Internal trade. It is said he will bring 1 500 men, and attempt a negotiation (through our agents) with the Indians in the intervening coun try: and if they refuse amicable terms, he threatens to chastise them for depredations commit ted on the Spanish settlements.
