"The victim, (Mr. John Wil
liams,) on his return homo from a
prayer meeting, was shot by a vil
lain in waiting for him, and sur
vived but a few hours. On the
following day, a person by the
name of Spierman, was arrested,
and after examination, committed
to prison to await his trial for the
murder; the wife of the deceased,

The State Bank. Monday last
being the day fixed by law for the
annual meeting of the Stockhold
ers of this Institution, for the elec
tion of Directors, Sec. it was ac
cordingly held at the Bank, in this
city. Col. Wm. Polk was called
to the Chair. A Committee wTas
appointed to look into the Affairs
of the Bank; and on the following
day the Directors were elected.
The meeting of the Stockholders
then adjourned subject to the call
of the Chairman.
The only changes in the Direc
tory of the Principal Bank, were
the election of H. M. Miller and
M. Cannon, in the places of
William Shaw and Gavin Hogg,
