ed corn; some planted the corn
among the cotton, and then the
fields had as much the appear
ance of a corn as a cotton field.
In August the hot weather and a
few showers brought forward the
plant rapidly, and hopes began to
raise; the shoots put out and
spread, and it the season should
prove favorable afterwards and
the frost be late, we promised
ourselves a tolerable fair crop,
but it was evidently a month be
hind in growth. The storm took
place 25th August; at first view it
did not appoar to have- injured
the crop of cotton materially
many of my neighbors said not at
all; I thought differently, and the
event will prove I was correct.
Though the wind did not pros
trate the cotton as it did the corn,
yet it blew off the blossoms, and
the shape and forms, whipped the
leaves and young plants; since the
25th August we have had only
one light shower, the leaves are
falling off and formsand many
of the bolls or pods, and the plant
does not appear to thrive, and it
is now too late in the season to
hopo for any improvement. I am
of opinion that in this district not
more than two-third, and might
more salely say one-half, a crop
will be made, and in this opinion
I am confirmed by that of all my
neighbors. One gentleman told
me to-day that were ho made 70
bales last year, he dons not expect
,lo make ever 20 to 25 this."

The Sra.-on. Extract of a let

to his friend in New-York,
dated Sept. 27, 1827:
Wo have had altogether a ve
iy unfavorable season for Cotton.
I'hose who planted early, say
middle of April when the weather
vTas warm, suffered by the very
'old weather subsequent, which
'dpped the young plants and in
"'tost instances killed it. Early
!!l May it was cold and dry, and
n,- weather intervened between
dint find June that could be
,:'dled favorable for planting Cot
and in June also we had some
l-xirouio cold weather for this cli
mate; the plant consequently came
"p under very unfavorable circum
ducts, nor did it appear to
!nve at all until some rains and
u,t weather helned it fm-wm-d in
'dy. So bad was the prospect,
'illd so often was it replanted, that
many despairing of it, and some
able to procure more seed,
workmen there average, in their
diggings, about a dollars' worth of
gold per day.
