Adieu, sweet child! thou art faraway From this cold world of ours; And we should not have wish'd to stay Thy flight to heavenly bowers. That bud of, life which promised here A sweet and fragrant flower; Shall brightly bloom and blosscm there, Rear'd by Almighty power. Thus reason whispers to us all Points to the Christian's creed; But, ah! affection'1 'a tear will fall, The stricken heart must bleed. O'er the cold erave where Lazarus slept, (Known only as his friend;) Moved by compassion "Jesus wept," Say then shall human tears offend? O, no! and yet there is a rest A holy calm for those that weep; When pensive thought shall fill the breast. And, only, so lac1 d grief its vigils keep. Adieu, sweet child!
