FRIDAY, MAY 22, 182$. Revival... .We turn Uith pleasure for a moment from the gloomy details of Wars and rumors of wars abroad, from the shouts and groans of successful and defeated politicians at home, and from the pecuniary difficulties and embarrass ments by which our immediate neigh bors are surrounded, to record an event upon which the philanthropist could look with complacency, and the Chris tian with heart-felt joy and gratitude. During the last week, through the instru mentality of several preachers of the Gospel, an unusual and extraordinary religious excitement prevailed among the citizens of this place; and, on Thurs day, five young female converts were added to the Baptist Church under the pastoral charge of the Rev. P.VV. Dowd. A considerable number of others appear deeply affected, and sanguine hopes are entertained that the goodly effects of this solemn visitation have not yet been all developed. Internal Improvements.. ..The fol lowing was recently addressed, in the form of a Circular, to several of the citi zens of this county: Sir: A number of patriotic citi zens, during the last winter, at tion of the surplus produce to the general markets of the world! 2. The State having provided the means of Education for the rich, should she not establish Free Schools for the poor, and in what manner can a fund be raised for this purpose? 4. They accordingly appointed a Commit tee of five persons in each county, (with power to increase their num bers) with a request that said Committee should aid them in their undertakings, and ascertain the opinions of the citizens in their respective counties. Without ex pressing a preference for any par ticular scheme of improvement, they request a full and free ex pression of the sentiments of each individual as to the object to be improved, and the best method of making said improvement. Should they succeed in ascertaining the opinion of the people, they will recommend to the consideration of the Legislature, those subjects which may seem most desirable. The Committee for the County of JLidgecombe at their last meeting, resolved "that the aforesaid object would be more satisfactorily at tained by enlarging their numbers, and adding to the Committee cer tain persons from each Captain's district." They resolved further, "that the members of the enlarg ed Committee should be requested to meet at the Court-House in Tarboro', on the first Thursday in June next" at which time and place you are respectfully invited to attend as a member thereof. It is expected that you will ex pruss your seimmenis ireeiy on the following subjects, and that you will suggest for the considera tion of the meeting such others as may occur to you. 1st. Golden Statue. The Cheraw Spectator states that on Saturday, 9th inst. the river boat Franklin was launched at the boat yard of Oheraw, and that there was pla ced on board of her a solid lump of Gold, which weighs about one hundred and thirty-eight pounds, as near as may be! This stupendous and magnifi cent curiosity was derived from a single mine in Montgomery coun- ty, North-Carolina, formerly own ed by a man of extremely limited pretensions to affluence. The Executive Council met in this city on Thursday last, for the purpose of appointing a Judge of the bupreme Court of this State, in the place of Chief Justice Tay lor, deceased, and adjourned on the following day. The follow ing members attended: Gideon Alston, Archibald M'Bryde, Thos. Kenan and George W. Jeffreys, Esqs. being a bare quorum of the Council. When it shall bo taken to New- York, to be thence re-shipped to Europe as a curiosity, the whole world will then acknowledge the truth of our statement. This great mass of precious metal was several years in being concentrated together. The ope ration of adding to the treasure, was performed in the most secret manner, until the proprietor tho't he had amassed as much as it would be prudent to usher before the world with safety. The whole was then moulded together some what to resemble at a little dis tance, the form and structure of our own species in an erect posi tion. It represents the model of a statue as nearly as the rough state of the arts and sciences in the interior could be reasonably supposed to have adapted it. Gold Mines. Referring to the gold mines in this State, the last Raleigh Register observes: "Already there are several com panies from the North and South engaged in the business, and we have recently heard of the forma tion of a company in Baltimore with a capital of 50,000, for working a mine in Cabarrus. In deed, monied men from every quarter of the Union, are purcha sing up land, for which they pay extravagant nrines. T?r;1 . . - i viw"u ca- pitahsts have not thought it be neath their attention to visit the Gold Region, for purposes of spe culation; one of whom informed us, a few days since, that he had just returned from a visit to the South American mines, and that those of North-Carolina greatly exceed them in riches. In the county of Mecklenburg alone, it is believed, the amount of gold dug from the bowels of the earth, in each xcceky produces $2,OOo! And it is nothing uncommon for the merchants in the town of Charlotte, when they go on to make their purchases, to carry with them from 10 to 40 pounds of the precious metal. It can ea sily be imagined what life and ac tivity is infused into every depart ment of business, where the only Bank which is required to relieve the wants of the people is a bank of earth." "We are not without hope, from some recent discoveries, that gold will yet be found in this (Wake) county. The first discovery of it was made in Cabarrus, and confi ned to that county for many years. The limits within which it was then supposed to be embraced, are continually enlarging, as people have been led to search the country for it. It has been subse quently found in the counties of Rutherford,Burke,Lincoln, Meck lenburg,Rowan, Anson, Davidson, Montgomery, Randolph, Caswell, Guilford, Orange, and very re cently in Chatham." Washington, N. C. May 16.... At the last term of Hyde Superior Court of Law, before Judge Nor wood, the trial of a negro slave named Allen, the property of Ri chard Young, charged with com mitting a Rape on a white female, came on.
