Jay last. On the morning of thatjthe purpose of visiting the Chero- cay the Court took up the case of.kces, to the west of the Missis- the State vs. Nancy Chittem, char ged with beinr accessary to the murder of Joseph J. Lindsay, of Currituck county. The Court was occupied in this case from 10 cj clock, A. M. till near night in obtaining a jury and examining witnesses; it was then argued at some length by the counsel pro and con, and committed to the ju ry by a charge from his Honor about 10 o'clock, when they reti red a short time and returned a verdict of not guilty. The deceased was at the time of his death, the lawful husband of the prisoner, whom she left for her present husband, John Chit tem. He now stands condemned as an accessary to the same mur der, and will receive the sentence of the law this week at the Court sitting for Currituck county. Ne gro March who was employed to commit the deed, was tried, con victed and executed in Tyrrell county last fall. Star. interment. Newborn Sent. sippi. Richmond Compiler. The necessity of arresting fur ther cruel misrepresentations may draw forth a more particular ac count of the late unpleasant ev ents touching Gov. Houston but in the mean time it may be briefly stated, that in an unhappy hour his judgment became shaken on her tnrone then this gallant and ge nerous man became the victim of a vague, most unfounded and un just suspicion; the innocent and amiable object returned to the pa rental root; no sort of violence used, as has been falsely report ed; the Governor resigned his of fice, and has retired amons the Cherokces, west of the Mississip pi, one of whose chiefs is his old and ardent friend. Rich. Enq. Blue Book Researches. At the beginning of the present year, the 25G officers of the Departments of fetate, War, the Navy and Trea sury, were filled from different states, counties, &c. as follows. We add, in round numbers, the Casualty. We regret to state that Capt. David Willis, for many years a prudent navigator in the merchant service of this place, was lost from a lighter, at lower Broad Creek, a short distance be low Newborn, on xMonday, the 27th ult. He had that morning, in the prosecution of a determina tion to relinquish the sea and re sort to the less hazardous pursuits of agriculture, taken passage for his farm and was taking the depth of water with an oar, when he fell overboard and perished before as sistance could reach him. The wue oi oapi. vuiis was on board & witnessed the aixonizinji scene. Thus, in the prime of life, and at a moment as he believed, ot per fect security, has this experienced mariner, after years of exposure to the perils or the ocean, found his last enemy in the waters of the Neuse, The body of the decea sed was discovered on MnnrLiv j j 0 last, and brought to this place for do with this, North-Carolina, in- g to the last census: Maryland, 84 407,000 Pennsylvania, 43 1,040,000 Virginia, 36 1,065,000 Dis. of Columbia, 13 33,000 Massachusetts, 12 553,000 Ireland, 12 England, 7 New-Jersey, 6 277,000 New-York, 6 1,672,000 Connecticut, 6 275,000 Delaware, 5 72,000 South-Carolina, 4 502.000 Maine, 4 298,00Q Scotland, 4 Kentucky, 2 564.000 North-Carolina, 2 638,000 Switzerland, 2 Vermont, 1 235,000 Minorca, 1 Tennessee, 1 422,000 Holland, 1 Georgia, J 340,0Q0 Prqssja, I Russia, X S3,000 German, 1 If population had any thing 1 Governor Houston. The New Orleans Argus of the 25th uh. has an article upon Gov. Houston which we have no doubt is incor rect. "It appears that the Gover nor, disappointed in not receiving a portion with a young lady of re spectable family, whom he mar ried about three months ago, or from some other motive, had pub licly calumniated and defamed his wile; at which the sovereign peo ple were so indignant, that they burn'; the Governor in effigy in se veral places. At Nashville the troops were called out to prevent a similar execution." We understand that the Gover nor's mind had become distem pered; and that he had indulged some very singular and most un founded suspicions; the mere coi nage of a diseased imagination that his lady had retired to her fa ther house in Gallatin, Tennes see, which he had subsequently visited for the purposes of recon ciliation; here, and here only, as far as we understand, was he burnt in effigy. All his overtures being ejected, he had retired to Nash Jjlle, and then threw up his office. lle has since left the State, for stead of furnishinp two. should fqrnish a irnich greater number of officers than Maryland. Singular Decision. The Su preme Court of Alabama has de cided that a horse is altogether a different thing from a gelding. A fellow was indicted for stealing a horse; but escaped because the animal was a gelding. Execution. On Friday, 10th ult. Joseph Williams was execu ted in Marion, Georgia, for the murder of Nimrod Philips. After his trial he exhibited the most hardened indifference to his fate. When taken from the jail, and on his way to the place of execution, he continued to hum a frivolous song; and while under the gal lows took several drinks of whis key. Up to the last moment he behaved with the utmost reckless ness and hardihood. He observ ed to the byestanders that he did not wish to go into another world with a broken neck, and his head on his shoulder; and being aware of the moment, at which he wras to be suspended, drew up his legs before the Sheriff had let go the drop, and accordingly suspended himself, without breaking his neck.
