American Opium The Nor
folk Beacon contains: an article on
the suhiect of the culture of the
White Poppy, in which it is shewn
that the soil and climate of Virgi
nia, Georgia, and the Carolinas
are peculiarly favorable for the
raising of that plant, and that by
experiments ipade on some pro
duced in the neighborhood of
that city, it had been ascertained
that it yielded about half more
opium than the average yield of
the plant in Turkey. The Nor
folk writer recommends the sub
ject to the attention of agricultu
rists and horticulturists, as a
source of profit. "It has this par
ticular advantage," says he, "over
every other crop, that the slight
degree of labor required in its cul
ture and preparation, renders it a
light and agreeable occupation
for a hand disqualified by age or
infirmity for more hardy and ro
bust employment." 4
