To the Public is understood that tjie Commissioners appointed by the Le gislature to superintend the rebuilding of i ho Capitol have determined to lay the Corner Stone of the edifice on the 4th of July next. This occasion, it is ex pected from the arrangements that have Im'cm made, will call together a large number of the most intelligent and re spcctablu citizens of the State. It is believed that this meeting will afford a favorable opportunity to ascer tain public sentiment with respect to the various projects of Internal improve ments, which have been proposed in dif ferent sections of the country, and per haps produce unity of action in support of such system or operations as may be best calculated to advance the general good. Tu this end the unpersigned beg leave rcspectfullyto invite public attention to the subject, and propose that a convention he held in this city at the period above mentioned, to be composed of such del egates as may be appointed for this pur pose by the several counties and towns m this State. Raleigh, June 14. ..The Supreme Court of this State commenced its Summer Term on Monday last. Star. Laying the Corner Stone vj the Capi tol. -By the following notice, it will be seen that the ceremony of laying the Cor ner Stone of our Stale Capitol is to take place on the 4th of July next: CThe Commissioners appointed to rebuild the Capitol of the State, having determined to lay the Corner Stone, in which is to be deposited a metalic engra ving commemorative of the event, on the 4th day of July next, have felt it due to the character of the State to jjive general notification of the fact, and respectfully to invite His Excellency . Governor j Swain, the President, Professors and Faculty of the University, the members of the Legislature of the Staff, the Judges of the Supreme and Circuit Court, the gen tlemen of the bar, and all other citizens of the Slate, to be present and join in tiie ceremony. ib. King Merchant loss $4000. Dr. Haywood 1 house occupied by Win. Smith, barberloss $300. Bernard Dupuy 1 house, occupied by himself as a Jewellery store lass $2000. Wm. White 1 house, occupied by Mr. John O. fctedman, Jeweller loss $G00. Col. Polk 1 house, occupied by Mr. John G. Marshall, Grocer loss $400. John blevvart 1 house, occupied by Mr. Wm. ray lor, tailor loss 300. Turner & Hughes the greater nor lion of their books saved; their loss, how ever, is considerable $5000. Benj.. S. King nearly the whole of his groceries and hardware and many other goods destroyed loss $1500. Mr. John G. Marshall's and Mr. John C. Stedman's loss was but small. G?A man named Lewis was arrested yesterday morning, and committed to prison, on suspicion of having set the town on fire. 0?An affray look place on the morning of the fire in this city, between Seawell Moore and 0 man by the name of Tippet which came near terminating fatally to the latter. The quarrel, we understand, arose about a comb, valued at 5 cents, which Tippet had borrowed of Moore, and failed to return. Moore stabbed Tippet in three or four places- He is, we learn, likely to recover from his wounds; though his life was despaired of some time after the affray. 83 Leghorns! Leghorns!! Ltghomb!!! Our devoted City has again been visited by a most destructive conflagration'. About half past 12 o'clock on Saturday morning last, our citizens were aroused from their beds by the loo familiar and appal ling cry of "Fire!" The flames were ob served bursting out from the second sto ry windows of Mr. Cobbs' coach manu factory, located in Morgan street, adjoin ing Messrs. Turner & Hughes' book store. Such was the combustible nature of the building, that before the citizens had time to repair to the scene of confla gration, it presented one solid mass of flames, and in a few moments the large and elegant establishment of Messrs. Turner & Hughes caught fire and shar ed the same fate. Stron" exertions were made to arrest the progress of the de vouring element, but to no purpose, until it had deiroyed m its ravages the entire range of buildings on Fayettcvillc street, from the corner of Morgan street to Mr. Steward's dwelling house The latter was saved with the greatest difficulty. The fiict of this being the third extensive G7The President of the United States, on his northern tour, arrived at New York on Wednesday afternoon, the 12th iust. He landed on the south side of Castle Garden, amid the roar of cannon and the cheers of the multitude. The President was also received with great demonstrations of joy at Baltimore and Philadelphia. RAN OFF from my plantation on Toisnot, Edgecombe county, on the 19th inst. a negro man named 22 or 23 years old, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, stout built, quite yellow for the appearance of his hair which is as knotty as the negro's usually is, has long lips, large feet and long toes, has a down look when spoken to, had on when he went off dark clothes and a black furred hat. He will probably lurk about Dr. Hall's plantation near Tarboroughi where his father and mother are, until he can procure free papers to pass to a free State, as he has done the like before. I will give the above reward to any person who will confine him in some jail within this State so that I get him again, or deliver him to me in Stantonsburg. WILLIE BROWNRIGG. BROKE JAIL, of Edgecombe county, on the night of the 2d February, 1833, negro Said to be the property of James B. Tartt, of Alabama. Said negro is about thirty years of age and has a dark complexion he was brought here from the jail in Chatham county, and it is probable he will attempt to get back in that neigh borhood any information respecting him will be thankfully received.
