In answer to the iimny lettere and intero gntories ol my siilMscrilieiv und others inter ested, "why tho delay in publishing the siieeessive numbers of my history i" 1 avail 1113 self of this medium to reply. A history of tlie part erformed by "North Carolina in the war Initweeu the States," whs eont-eiveil and begun by me some four years ago. Justice, and the defunct! of iny comiades deuiandeil that such a hi story shoulil be attempted, and with this view I camo to Wjwshiitfjton where material and f:icts could Ik- found to write such defence. My aim has leen to preserve to North Carolina, and to the South, a true record of the valor, the constancy and heroic fortitude of the men who fouyht on field and flood, un der the banner of the Southern Cross. I have attempted nothing beyond a simple and carefully accurate statement of faeta. with the hope to stimulate further research, ami that, by relating victories achieved nnd deeds of valor done, a memoir would t furnished to some future and more able, seeker after historic truth. As I have before remarked in the preface to my book; "an unimbeilished narrative of North Carolina's efforts in the great straggle to maintain Constitutional rights, would be the hiliost eulogy that cauld be pronounced upon the people of the state." It is not necessary "to weave any fable borrowed from scandiiiariau lore into the woof of our history, to inspire our youths into admiration of glorious deeds in freedom's battles done; in the t rue history of the army of Northern Virginia, v. hir-h laid down its arms" not con quered but wearied with victories "we will have a record of deed: of valor, of unselfish consecration to duty, and faithfulness in death, which will teach our sons, and our son's sons how to the for liberty." Then, may I not ask my people, my comrades, you, who are the survivors of this might-struggle, to see to it, thnt.it shall be transmitted to them? ' Like yourselves when the tocsin sounded, 1 went forth to do battles, at the bidding of North Carolina. It was not our fortune to reap the fruitsof successful war we returned to our hoiues to find poverty and desolation no gleaming chaiells des Invalides! no grand hisrotic Abbey! Ah! but we kept our honor, we gained a fame which malice can not touch which llorid panegyric cannot iujuro. 1 huve given my time, untiring labor,' my heart and head's best service, my scanty means, to preserve this record for you. Will you allow it togo unpublished? "The reward for oi.e duty is the power to fulfiill another." Do you acknowledge a duty to those com rades who lay by your side in the bivouac of the night, and was struck dead bv your side in the battles of the morrow? If so, I ask your subrciption that I may be enabled to carrv out and complete my work ol love. U-em. JOHN A. SLOAN. N a t li a 11 Mayer, REPRESENTING IZossK'dDi, Crcrstleij, Co.
