LOCALS AND PERSONALS
Mr. John Moore of near Mor
ten is completing a handsome
country residence. He is a hard
working man and deserves to be
well boused.
A young son of Bob McKoy,
colored, of Morven townshipr am
putated the small toe of his left
foot' on Thanksgiving day, using
a shot gun to perform the opera
tion. The Cheraw Chronicle says:
"Mr. Henry Kirkwood, of near
Bennettesville, was in town Tues
day with eight bales of cotton.
He sold the cotton for 8 cents.
He was offered for this same cot
ton in Bennettsville only 6 cents,
thus it will be seen Mr. Kirkwood
made $60 by using the free ferry
and coming to Cheraw." Pity
Mr. Kirkwood didn't bring that
cotton to Wadesboro, get 9 cents
for it and thereby make $40 more
on his load.
Of counse everybody wants to
see the young boys have a good
time and enjoy every legitimate
pleasure, but some good people
think they are allowed too much
liberty in the matter of handling
guns and rifles. It is . quite com
mon to see'Vsmall fellows ranging
in age from ten to fifteen years,
carrying around breech-loading
shot guns and cartridge rifles like
their fathers carry. Now it is a
pity and may result in a tragedy,
that these young boys cannot find
amusement of another nature un
til they are capable of handling
deadly weapons. The Ansonian
wants news but it is not anxious
to print an account of an acci
dental death due to this parental
carelessness.
There are two small boys,
Forest and Rowland Kelly, aged
13 and 15 respectfully, who de
serve especial credit for what they
have accomplished this year.
Their father, the late Rowland
Kelly of Lilesville township, was
accidental y killed, last year and
these two boys have made a crop
of ten bales of cotton and 140
bushels of corn during the present
year without employing extra
labor. True, they have good land
and a good mother to advise them,
but 'for boys so young to have
worked as these two have done, is
commendable indeed. They do
not smoke, chew, drink or curse,
and unless all signs utterly fail,
they will make two manly men
and citizens of whom Anson county
will be proud.

The Goods tie Sells
Men may come and men may
go;
The fact is, some are always' de
parting.
But we've had with us since
long ago.
That old reliable, G. A. Martin.
In this verse I do not aspire,
To say anything that tickles.
But it is well known that he

Young men, on the roads of court

'May buy from him aCorbitt Bug

They run so easy you do not have
to tarry
And young ladies better not ride
with you,
If they do not wish to marry.
Young men, if you ever expect to
marry,
Start ri?ht now, it doesn't pay to
tarry.
Go to Mr. Martin and get a Cor-
bitt buggy
If you want to be a little wify's
hubby.
There is nothing like taking a girl
to ride
For then she is always close by
your side;
You can pop the question with
perfect ease
Without the trouble of getting on
your knees.
Boys, you can make your girl love
you, two plus double
If you will tell Mr. Martin your
trouble.
Boys I'll tell you a dead sure
thing,
Without a buggy you are not in
the ring,
In the world of cotton buyers, he
is in the hrst ranks.
He will pay the highest price and
and ship it to May banks.
In the cotton business, he is a
good fighter,

Bryan or no Bryan, Taft or no

He makes no howl,
But if you want the best guano,
He will sell you the famous Sea-
Fowl.
He wishes to deal with all men
in fairnesss,
And least we forget, with that
buggy,
He will sell you some good har
ness. And last but not least,
Without putting on too much
speed,
He will pay you the highest price,
For all of your cotton seed.
The old man knows and the

WHAT A LAZY MAN DID.
The Carolina Spartan gives an
interesting epitome of a speech
delivered in Spartanburg not long
ago by Mr. C. C. Moorepresident
of the Cotton Association of North
Carolina.
Mr. Moore told about the laziest
man in his State.
He was a cotton farmer.
He believed in cotton and plant
ed little else.
He kept getting poorer and
poorer.
The cotton crop got lighter and
lighter.
Instead of making both ends
meet at the ends of the year, Le
had no ends to bring together and
no means to fasten them. ,
His children had scanty 'clothes.
There were no books and papers
and no timt .o go tc chool.
As he got poorer he got lazier
and he soon got so lazy he quit
planting cotton and tried home
supplies.
Mr. Moore said that he visited
him at his home and took dinner
with him, sevral years after he
quit cotton.
Strange to-, say this lazy man
had a well furnished house, 'neatly
dressed children, an elegant dining
room and a dinner that was not to
to be forgotten, nearly all of which
was produced on the farm.
After dinner he walked out to
the barn and there he saw more
signs of the man's laziness.
He had a splendid barn and fine
stock but he was actually too lazy
to open the doors of the stalls and
water his animals. .
He had a watering fountain in
every stall.
All he had to do was, to turn a
SDicot when the fountain was
empty.
He was too lazy to throw hay
and fodder from the loft and dis
tribute it in the stalls.
He made a sort of funnel out of
strong fencing wire in a corner of
every stall and the lazy fellow
would chuck in a hundred or more
pounds of hay and the horse could
eat as long as it lasted.
None would be wasted.
When he raised nothing but
cotton, he would slip off to the
creek Saturday afternoon and wash
the dust and dirt off and dry on
the bank. He had only a few
towels then.
But he had become entirely too
lazy to go to the creek to wash.
He just walked into a bath room
and turned on hot or cold watei as
he desired and got into a porcelain
tub.
He then had two towels to dry
his body instead of none as in the
old cotton days.
The lazy fellow had also put
water in the kitchen so that wife
and daughters did not have to go
to the 'well or throw water out of
the window.
He was a very lazy man indeed
and wished, to save steps and to
take all the burdens off his wife
and daughters.
He was too lazy to teach his
children, so he supplied them with
books and magazines and sent his
daughters to a college in Charlotte
and his boys to other schools and
colleges.
Such is the sketch of Mr. Moore's
laziest man.
How many such lazy men have
we in South Carolina? Would it
not be well, the Spartan asks, if
they could be counted by the hun
dreds in every county?
