match to apply to the rudely made

off and ignited the charge, the ex

His hand was practically blown to
pieces, and his face was terribly
burned.
Dr. York, who attended him, was
at first fearful of the result, but

Runaway Marriage
A
Some time between io and " i
o'clock Wednesday morning H tel
ephone message was received here
| from Bethel that Mr. Herbert Ward
ami Miss Lucy Gurganus, both of
this town ha I just been married in
that place by the Rev, Mr. Martin
This was quite a surprise to the
frieuds of both as it was not known
that they had left town.
Miss Gurganus, who is not yet
sixteen, told her mother that
she was going to spend the day
with Mrs. John Cook, whose hus
band was in Norfolk. She lett
I home early and instead of going to
Mrs. Cook's she met her sweet
heart at the train where he was
waiting for her. Mr. Ward had
gotten someone to buy him a couple
of tickets, this keeping suspicion
from his movements.
The couple returned on the pas
senger train Wednesday night.
They will make their home with
the bride's mother on Main street.
