There was a large crowd out in spite of the cold weather. A number of speeches were made and the ftav pleasantly spent, —The Easter services at the Church of the Advent last Sun day were greatly enjoyed by large congregations at both services. The mnsical program as arranged, and advertised in our last issue, was creditably rendered, and has received much praise. —Rev. C. L. Read returned from Hamilton Wednesday. He held a protracted meeting there for about ten dajs, and while there was 110 decided visible results from the meetiug. the meeting was not a failure. The church members were greatly benefitted. —News wal' received here yes terday of the suddeu death of Mr. Charles Forbes of near Everetts. Mr. Forbes died Wednesday even ing about dark. He waa a good farmer and a clever man. He leaves a wife and a number ol children. The funeral will take place today at 1 o'clock and will be conducted by the Masonic or der of which lie was a member. —Water was struck in the ar tesian well last Friday aud the boring was discontinued. A force pump was put on Wednesday to try the water, it was soou Si I pumped out. The water was mud dy aud reemed not to get any clear er. The town commissioners will not accept the well as it is. so it is up to the drillers to pet to work and give us good water. It is un derstood that the commissioners have agreed on going another hun dred feet if necessary. The well is tow 270 feet deep. Mr. W. E. Jones, representing the Washington Heights , Investment Co., of Washington, N. C., was in town Wednesday accompanied by a surveyor. Mr. Jones drove from Washington to Robersonville and thence to Williamston, looking over the territory with the view ot of running an electric car line from Washington to this place. These gentleman returned to Washington going through the Griffins Town ship section. It is given out by good authority that if the sur veyor recommends the plan it will be put through, - DIOCESAN CONVENTION Annual Meeting to be Held in Tar boro the Middle ot Hay The ninety-first annual conven tion of the Diocese of North Car olina and the twenty-first anniver sary of the Womans' Auxilarv will be held in Calrary church, Tarboro, beginning on May 15th, 1907, at 10 o'clock. Watts went to Rob ersonvilie this morning to see her sister, Mrs. W. Z. Morton, who is very ill. Miss Nelle Simpson returned from Washington last night where she had been with her sister, Mrs. Lela Newell, who is in the hos pital there. Mrs. Newell is much better. Mrs Lela Newell who has been seriously ill for several days was taken to the Washington Hospital Tuesday morning. She was ac companied by her brother Mr. J. Paul Simpsou. Miss Gentry of the Washington Hos pital force. The latest report is that she is getting along very well. Mrs. Wheeler Martin returned last night from a trip to Washing ton aud Baltimore. Miss Nora Fowden went to Ply mouth Tuesday. Mrs. Fred Hoyt, who has been spending some time with her par ents, Mr. and Mr«. Walter Hassell, left for her home in Washington Wednesday morning. Miss Nelle Simpson left Wed nesday morning for Washington to be with her sister, Mrs. Lela New'ell who is sick to the hospital there. Mrs. T. A. Stalliugs aud her mother, Mrs. Mary Short, who have been visiting in town for some time, left for their home in Atlan ta, Ga., Wednesday morning. Miss Eliza Daniel, who has been visiting friends and relatives in town for some time, has returned to her home in Rocky Mount. Mr. and Mrs. Rawleigh Carter and Mr. C. C. Mr. Julius Peel, who received an appointment as stenographer and was sent to the Charleston Navy Yard, has been home for sev eral days before going to Panama to which point he has been trans ferred. Shaw, of Washington, who had been in town for two or three weeks repairing ai.U tuu itig pianos and organs was taken sericusly ill at the Atlantic Hotel last Saturday afternoon and died Sutitfay morning about three o'clock of choral poisoning. Mr. Shaw was on the street about dinntr time Saturday talk ing with friends and seemed to be all right. He went to bis room and was not seen any more until al>out six o'clock when a went in to look after the room. The ser vant noticed that he was hreath fng l>adly aud called Mr. Jones, the clerk, who immediately sum moned physicians. It was thought at first that he had had a stroke of appoplexy. The medicine admin istered seemed to act favorably us he was aroused from the tincon cous condition about eight o'clock. Mr. Shaw's people in Washing ton were notified by phone and his son, Mr. Linden Shaw arrived about one o'clock, driving through the country about tweuty two miles. All that physicians' skill could do was rendered Mr. Shaw, the en entire medical fraternity was with him most of the time from the time he was found unconcious. ' But the effect of the choral »vas too great aud he passed away at 3:10 Sunday morning. His remains were taken to Wash ington on Sunday morning. He had been splitting logs for some time and got to oue that was too tough for him aud he resorted*to the use of powder. Af ter boring the hole and putting in the charge of powder he made a fuse of shavings, when striking the match to apply to the rudely made fuse, the head of the match flew off and ignited the charge, the ex plosion which followed burs ted the log! a large piece striking Mr. Glissou over the right eye making n» ugly scalp wound. A large splinter struck him in the pupil of the left eye destroying the sight' His hand was practically blown to pieces, and his face was terribly burned. Miss Gurganus, who is not yet sixteen, told her mother that she was going to spend the day with Mrs. John Cook, whose hus band was in Norfolk. She lett I home early and instead of going to Mrs. Cook's she met her sweet heart at the train where he was waiting for her. Mr. Ward had gotten someone to buy him a couple of tickets, this keeping suspicion from his movements. The couple returned on the pas senger train Wednesday night. They will make their home with the bride's mother on Main street.
