Friday, April 19, 1907 Tuesday the 7th day of May is town election. There is no talk as to what will be done in regard to the government of the towu, but it is thought that probably the same board will be reelected. The bond issue for tbe town hall wilj be voted on. This is expec ted to be carried and Williamston will have a fine public building. There is some talk, however, abou passing an ordinance for keeping up cows. An ordinance of this kind should by all means be passed If you know of an item or a piece of news tell us about it. That's what we want. But 0 newspaper man sometimes ex periences more difficulty iu gather ing news than one would imagine. This was the case when a reporter in a neighboring towu, who, a few days ago was sent to write lip a fire in a residence. Going to the door he inquired for the lady of the house. The maid said she was out. "Are any of the family at home?" inquired the scribe. "Noj they are all out," was the reply. "Well, wasn't there a fire here last evening?" "Yes," said the hired 'girl, "but that's out too." The trade territory of a town is not all dependent upon the distance to neighboring trading points The trade territory depends upon the residents of the town. If a town dose not reach after the trade it will come only as last as it has to, and it will grow as it is forced to. But if the merchants go after business in the surroiun.- ing country, advertising ill every possible way, and making good every word of their advertising, trade will come from an everin creasiug radius, the town will gain a reputation for being awake and it will forge to the front. It is the men iu the town and not altogether living within a certain number of utiles from it that makes the town. One of the many growing evils of this country today is the city department store. In OUT town, where we have the best of stores, the most honorable of merchants, and where goods are sold at a mar gin so small a» not to afford a res pectable living to our business men, thousands of dollars are anuually sent to the department stores of our great cities. Farmers expect our merchants to pay them a fancy price for butter, eggs and poultry, for their peanuts potatoes, tobacco and cotton and then they take the money received front - our home merchants arid rend it to a city department store. There is neither economy or honor in such a manner of doing business. You can write it down in your hat, that as a rule, the city department store is a swindle. Our citizens who patrouize them should be compelled to ship their butter and eggs to them There is not a business man in our town who will not duplicate their prices for the same quality of goods, and he who turns c mmm , and UicgTeatMt quantities of every growing thing 0«n readily be pro duced with tho liberaluieof Vinrlala- Carollaa Fertiliser*,together with careful cultivation. But few of our readers/ wt imagine, ever give a thought tc the value of this paper to the com uiunity. The home paper hat an influence for good that is hard to overestimate. It moulds public opinion ; it dose well its part iu protecting and preserving the government. It tnkes the place of a standing army iu guarding tht liberties of the people; it teachts your children morality, truth and power; it brings many rich bless ings to the home it visits with but little financial reward for its labors, and iu too jnany instances not any. The home paper is the mirror in which those at a distance see us. It is the plain duty of all who are interested iu our town to take p:r sonal interest in the town's paper and assist in every possible in uiakiug it a true representative ol our intelligent and hospitable peo ple as well as our enterprising and rapidly developing little city. Send the paper to your friends, biiug it* the news and do your duty by your home paper and it will meet yoti more than half way. When you help your home paper you help your town and indirectly help yourself, for we are all equally interested in our town and com munity. EUREKA 1 Yes. FLUE CURING IMPROVES TOBACCO LIKE ROASTING IMPROVES GREEN COFFEE Hue Curing Develop* the Stimulating Aroma and Taete Found bi Schnapps that SatMlee Tobacco Hunger There are three ways used by far mers for curing and preparing, their tobacco for the market; namely, sun cured, air cured and flue cured. The old and cheap way is called air cured; the later discovery and improved way is called flue cured. In flue-curing the tobacco is taken from the field and suspended over intensely hot flues in houses especially built td re tain the heat, and there kept in the proper temperature until this curing process developes in the tobacco the stimulating taste and fragrant aroma found in Schnapps tobacco, just as green coffee is made fragrant and stimulating by the roasting process. Only choice selections of this ripe, juicy flue cured leaf, grown in the famous Piedmont country, where the best tobacco grows, are used in Schnapps and other Reynolds' brands of high grade, flue cured tobaccos.
