before entirely destroying the atore.
, All the fixtures to the barber j
shop were practically destroyed,
those not entirely burned are use

Fire Averted.
Tuesday morning about 4 o'clock,
officer Brown went to Will Mizell's
room, in the Mobley Building, to
call Mr. Mizell, he being in the ha
bit of calling him each morning,
and while in the building heard
some one walking around in the
store below. Thinking some one
had broken iuto the store he went
aronnd to the rear entrance of
Phelps bar to investigate. The
rear of the building was found to
be alright, there being no signs of
a forced entrance. Not being
satisfied with this the officer tried
the door, but found it locked and
everything secure. The noise had
stopped and as it did not begin
again he returned to the street.
When the place was opened for
business that morning it was found
that kerosene oil or gasolene, or
both, had been poured aronnd in
the building as if preparations for a
fire bad been made. The timely
investigation of officer Brown put a
stop to the operation of the party
or parties oft the in-ide.

was carrying insurance on the
stock and fixture of E. A. Phelps,
seeing that a fire waa imminent at
onfce cancelled the policies.

Annual Neetlng.
The annual meeting of the
Womau'tAuxiliary, of the Church
of the Advent, was held at the
home of Mrs. D. S. Bigg*, on the
afternoon of November 29th. Rev.
W J. Oordon, rector of the
presided.
Business was disposed of iu its
regular order, followed by the
election of officers for the coming
year. Those choeen were: Miss
Hattie Thrower, president; Mra
K. B. Crawford, vice-president;
Miss K. S. Gotdon, secretary, and
Mrs. D. S. Biggs, treasurer.
A vote of thanks and apprecia
tion for the services of the retiring

proposed and heartily given. The
financial report made by Mrs. D. S
Biggs, treasurer, was the most
satisfactory since the organigation
of the auxiliary in 1895 The past

has lieen the best in the life of the
organization, owing without doubt
'o the splendid managment of its
officers.
! The life of a church society is
not to be noted by dollar marks,
but rather by that inner life, show
ing forth iu a morecordial relation
ship and a deeper love for the
church and its principles. Mrs.
Joseph M. Sitterson and
Lamb were gladly welcomed to the
membership of the auxiliary at
this meeting, and pleaced upon one
