Last Sunday uioruiung at 1 .40 o'clock the inhabitants of the town were awakened by the alarm of fire, j and soon a large crowd was oti the street. . j The fire wan iu Hyuian s barber shop next to the Post Office. After some delay the fire engine was put to work and the danger of the fire spreading to adjacent buildings was j overcome, and the fire was put out | before entirely destroying the atore. , All the fixtures to the barber j shop were practically destroyed, those not entirely burned are use less. In the rear of the shop a pressing club was conducted and a number of nit N of clothing be longing to various parties were de stroyed. The fire caught in the rear room and had about consumed every thing in it when it was discovered. The building, owned by H. T. Stalling* ot Jamesville, was con siderally damaged but the damage is covered by insurance, there be ing SIOOO on the building. There was $550 insurance on the barber shop, fiixttires, and clothing. Tuesday morning about 4 o'clock, officer Brown went to Will Mizell's room, in the Mobley Building, to call Mr. Mizell, he being in the ha bit of calling him each morning, and while in the building heard some one walking around in the store below. Thinking some one had broken iuto the store he went aronnd to the rear entrance of Phelps bar to investigate. The rear of the building was found to be alright, there being no signs of a forced entrance. Not being satisfied with this the officer tried the door, but found it locked and everything secure. The noise had stopped and as it did not begin again he returned to the street. When the place was opened for business that morning it was found that kerosene oil or gasolene, or both, had been poured aronnd in the building as if preparations for a fire bad been made. The timely investigation of officer Brown put a stop to the operation of the party or parties oft the in-ide. Insurance Agent Crawford, who was carrying insurance on the stock and fixture of E. A. Phelps, seeing that a fire waa imminent at onfce cancelled the policies. Not being able to get insurance on his stock Ml. Phelps has closed THE WILLIAMSON. X. C . DECEMBER 6, 1907 LOOKS BAD FOR ROEBUCK Martin County Boy In Richmond on Two Charges of Porgary. Richmond Va., Dec. 2—B. Roe buck. who was brought back from Williamston N. C. last night upon !an extradatioti warrant charging him with forgery, was arranged in ; the police court this morning. The case is continued until January 7 for further evidence. Iu the mean time, the grand jury, which went j into sexsionthis morning may in dict the voung mau. Robuck maintained a sullen si lence when confronted in court by A. Williams of Wilkinson, Wil liams and Reed which firm cashed for him, after he bad been intro duced as H. N. Ballard, a check for ten dollars, signed L. W. Bal lard aud Company. The cashier saw Roebuck sign this name. The other charge of forgery will have to be proved by a witness from North Carolina whose name he is alleged to have signed to the check cashed here. Roebuck was taken from here last Saturday afternoon by an officer from Richmond. He bad been in jail several days, having been sent to the officers of the law here by his father, who, evidently, had be come tired of bis son's acts. It is rumored that the father, some weeks ago, gave the sou money and told him to go to Norfolk or tome other point and leave the country, but instead of doing as his father bade him, he "blowed" the money and returned home, whereupon his father gave-him over to the officers Young Roebuck at one time was clerk in the post office here. The annual meeting of the Womau'tAuxiliary, of the Church of the Advent, was held at the home of Mrs. D. S. Bigg*, on the afternoon of November 29th. Rev. W J. Oordon, rector of the presided. Business was disposed of iu its regular order, followed by the election of officers for the coming year. Those choeen were: Miss Hattie Thrower, president; Mra K. B. Crawford, vice-president; Miss K. S. Gotdon, secretary, and Mrs. D. S. Biggs, treasurer. A vote of thanks and apprecia tion for the services of the retiring president. Mrs S. R. Biggs, was proposed and heartily given. The financial report made by Mrs. D. S Biggs, treasurer, was the most satisfactory since the organigation of the auxiliary in 1895 The past vear, in every feature of the work, has lieen the best in the life of the organization, owing without doubt 'o the splendid managment of its officers. ! The life of a church society is not to be noted by dollar marks, but rather by that inner life, show ing forth iu a morecordial relation ship and a deeper love for the church and its principles. Mrs. Joseph M. Sitterson and Lamb were gladly welcomed to the membership of the auxiliary at this meeting, and pleaced upon one of the committees in charge of the arrangements for the Bazaar to be held December 17th. The first meeting of the new t year will be held December 12, and the presence of every member is > earnestly requested.
