Friday, May The editor of this paper lias been asked lecently why it is that Wil liamstou's trees are never white washed, and the town is not beau tified. The only reason we can give is that those in charge of these haven't thought about it, or they are spending all the mon ey 011 the town hall. We are afraid to say too much about these things because we have been informed, indirectly, that we have nothing to do with the looks of the town, either from the stand point of the trees or the wooden shelters. This we admit, inasmuch as the editor is exempted fn.lll pity ing town taxes, and the fact that the paper is subsidized by the town authorities —we print the town financial statement once in about 10 years. [By printing the state ment we let the people of the town know what is being done with their money, if it wasn't for letting the eople know how the money was spent v\ e rather suspect that the statement would be published in the paper at least once in a cen tury.] But, at the risk of being called down again, and informed that it is none of our business, we will say this: our town should be made as attractive Jis possible, and this i s s -more important. mny than it has ever been, WilliauistonV business houses and the residences are in keeping with much larger towns, and the streets, walks and trees should be keep in good condition. Besides, whitewashing the trees will preserve them,, and make the town more healthful to live in. If those who are in favor of hav ing the town -look -clean and at tractive will get together and pre sent the matter to the commis sioners, we ate sure that they will do|what is best for the town, for a majority of the commissioners, we are sure, are in favor of having our town look as nice as other towns. 30 Days' Trial f 1.00 is the offer qn Piueules. The City Hall is Hearing com pletion and it seems to us that now is the time to make preparation for the lighting of it. We have heard a number of citizens express the opinion that the building should be lighted with acetylene gas. This would most assuredly give the best light for the opera house, as the gas light can be so arranged that any light needed in any per formance can be had. Besides, it would never do to light such a building as this with kerosene lamps, because one can never tell what kind of light there will be, to »ay nothing of the time and trouble iocideut to keeping the lamps in condition. Don't let us build a SII,OOO hall and put in the cheap est lights that can be had. We are building the hall for conven ience and let us follow this, idea out in all details. A Cillftriin's Lick "The luckiest day of my life was when I brought a box of Bucklen's Arnica Salve;" writes Cbatles F. J?udahn of Tracy, California. "Two £SC. boxes cured me of an annoy ing case of itching piles, which had troubled me for years and that yielded to no other treatment." Sold under guarantee at AU Drug- Hon, Locke Craig, candidate for the gubernatorial nomination, will be in Williamson Monday and will address the citizens on political issues. It is conceded by all who have heard Mr. Graig speak that he is one of the ablest speakers in North Carolina. Those who have never heard this gifted son of North Carolina speak should avail themselves of this opportunity. Those who have heard him will surely be entertained, to say the leist, if they attend the speaking Monday. A great many people imagine they have heart trouble when the fact is that the whole trouble lies in the stomach. The pains in the side around the region cf the heart are not necessarily heart trouble. We suggest that you start with the stomach and whenever you feel a depression after eating or when ever your food seems to nauseate take Kodol. It will not be very long until all these "heart pains" will disappear. Take Kodol now and until you know you are right again. There isn't any doubt al>out what it will do and you will find the truth of this statement verified after you have used Kodol tor a few weeks. It is sold here by Chase Drug Store and Biggs Drug Store. Profane Use of The Bible (News & Observer) Certain opponents of State prohi bition have sought 'to indict the Christian church and the Christian ministry bv assuming to declare that the Holy Bible warrants the use of the sort of intoxicating liquors that are doing more to de strov the morals and efficient work if North Carolina than anything else. Every minister in every church, so far as heard from, is dp posed to the manufacture and sale of intoxicating liquors. They have been at the business of a lifts time to search the Scriptures and expound the Word. They agree that there is no authority in the Bil'le for the profane use of texts of Scripture employed to uphold the liquor traffic, and that tlieTvorst enemy of the Christian religion is the still and the saloon. A few days ago the editor of The News and Observer wrote to his school boy preceptor, Elder Sylvester Hassell, of Williamston, editor of Gospel Messenger, lead ing exponent of the faith as held by Primitive Baptists, and request ed an expression of his position 111 the State prohibition campaign. 111 reply the following letter lias been received: "Williamston, N. C.,Mayy, 1908 "Mr Josephus Daniels, "Raleigh, N. C.. "Dear Sir: —In reply to your favor of May Bth I would sav that distilled liquors were unknown in Scriptural times, and I am opposed to their manufacture and their sale, both publicly and privately, as a beverage. In very small quantities they may occasionally be beneficial to some people as a medicine; but, when I buy a medicine and find it contains alcohol, I pour it out on the ground. "Yours truly, "SYUVESTKR HASSELI. " This was what was expected by all who know this man whose life and character, as well as his learn ing and instructions, were benedic tions to his pupils as they were to thousands who read his publication and hear him preach the gospel. There is one paragraph in the let ter that effectually disposes of the profanation by those advocates of saloons and stills who assume to __ > _ |' 1 * WHITE PINE COUCH SYRUP WITH TAR A Valuable Remedy lor CoMa, Goathi Bronchial Catarrh, Spatatodlc Crow. Elder Hassell says: "Distilled liquors were un known in Scriptural times.*' They are a product of a later age and therefore the Hible cannot be quoted in support of intoxicants. The Attempt to do so is a profane use6f the Bible. Let those who choose to vote for the saloon and still take unholy hands off the word of God, and not profane His word by using it as the refuge for the establishments that make drunk ards. Good bye and God bless you all. IMease never, never take a drink. The above is a copy of the letter written by Mr. McLohon a few hours before he was found dying, shot through the heart at the Episcopal Church gate on the night of Feb ruary 17, 1908. From it one can see that the act was planned after much deliberation. Thinking that if the fact was fully established his family could'not collect bis in surance, he insisted upon secrecy in the matter eyen as.he lay dying. In their grief the wife and sons could see no other course but to respect his wishes and remain sil ent. Later realizing that a cloud rested still upon the law-abiding people of Williamston, they wrote to Sheriff Crawford stating the truth and asking that the mantle of charity be thrown over their act. Every citizen of the town is glad to know that the mystery has been cleared. Many believed from the first that McLohon was a self-mur derer. Believing that, they still sympathized with his family and deplored the untimely end of the husband and father. There is no bitterness toward the family for letting the deed cloud for a time the good name of the town. Under the circumstances, they knew no other course, and desired to respect the wish of the dying man. vj "Health Coffee" is really the clos est Coffee Imitation ever yet pro duced.
