Judge Presiding; Hon.

LONNIE BELL CONVICTED
x
The Judge's Charge—The Jurors,
Oraud and Petit --- Criminal
Docket Finished
ID charging the Grand Jury the
Judge told them of the duties
which they were to perform, and
in an impressive and conversa
tional lecture clearly set out these
duties. They should examine the
jail and tee that it was comfortable
and sanitary. Men are frequently
put in jail, not for punishmeut,
but in default of bond, and other
causes; are put there for safe keep
ing until a trial of justice can be
had.
It is a duty we owe to ourselves
and community to examine the
County Home to see that the hous
es are in good condition and that
the inmates are properly cared for.
Good roads are necesssry to the
growth and development of any
community. Ido not dictate a
system, but whatever eysteni you
have it is your duty to see that
the supervisors attend to their du
ties and keep the roads in good re
pair. It is the duty of the super
visors to make a report to this
* court at each term and your duty
' to have them indicted for a failure
to make this report. There >s no
excuse for roads to remain in a bad
or impassible condition. If the
present system is not adequate,
then it is time for vou to get about
inaugurating another system.
Investigate and true present
ments make of all felonies commit
ted in this county. The Judge
then named over the most of the
crimes that would come under the
J 4 consideration of the \;rand jury,
I briefly defining those which men
not so commonly kUow.
It is the duty of every justice of
the peace and mayor in the county
to report to every court, every crim
inal case thev have disposed of
since the last term of court, and
the disposition made of the fines,
forfeitures, etc. which fines and
go to the school fund,
y There are certain crimes or pub
lic offepces which often go unpun
* ished, because there is no personal
nor private injury from them. Such
as carrying concealed weapons (and
it is your duty to present every
such offense which comes to your
knowledge and which has been
committed within the last two
years.) Illicit sale of intoxicating
Hiquors, sale of liquor on the Sab
bath or to minors, blokade distil
lers, etc., should be punished for
every vioiation.
| A special venire' of tWenty-five
'good and lawful citizens was called
j from which to select a jury to pass
I issue of life and death in the case
of State vs. Lonnie Bell. This case
had been set bv order of the Court
for trial at two-thirty o'clock Tues
day. The case was taken prompt
ly at the appo : nted time The
trial consumed about one day's
tiute, The court room was crowd-
I ed with spectators both whites and
1 negroes, especially negroes.it would
seem that the entire blatk popula
tion of Poplar Point township was
Crowded in the court hou*e until
this trial was over.
The prosecution was well presented
by our able solicitor, Hon. C. C.
Daniels. Hon. H. W. Stubbs put
yp a masterful defence and is to be
congratulated on getting the ver
dict reduced to manslaughter.
At this writing the sentence has
not been pronounced on defendant.

If one feels dull and spiritless, in
the spring or early summer, they
call it "Spring Fever". But there
is no fever—usually. It is the
after effect of our winter habits.
The nerves are mostly at fault.
Tired, worn-out nerves leaves us
languid, lifeless, and without spirit
or ambition. A few doses of Dr.
Shoop's Restorative will absolutely
and quickly change all of these de
pressing symptors. The Restora
tive of course won't bring you
back to full health in a day or two,
but it will do enough in 48 hours
to satisfy you that the remedy is
reaching that •'tired spot". Drug
gists everywhere are advising its
use as a splendid and prompt gen
eral tonic. It gives more vim and
more spirit to the spoonful than
any other known nerve or constitu
tional tonic. It sharpens a failing
appetite, aids digestion, frees slug
gish livers and kidneys, and brings
new life, strength and ambition.
Test it a few days and be convinc
ed. All Dealers.
