THE GBURING VILLI

"Whose Is tbat villa?" asked a tour
ist, polutlng to a residence ou tbe Lake
of Como. Tbe person questioned re
plied by a story. Aud this Is tbe story
Two uieu stood on tbe steamboat
landing ut Menagglo, on tbe northern
shore of tbe lake. Herman Trupp, tbe
elder, said to the other, a youngster of
twenty:
"Slartln, I have something to say to
you. You kuo\t how near us Is tbe
boundary line of Switzerland. Well,
for years 1 have been smuggling goods
over the border to tbe lake and once
across It have bnd no trouble In sell
big them In Italy. But tbe govern
nieut revenue boat which they have re
eently put on tbe lake turned Its
searchlight ou me last night while pull
Ing a boat load from shore to shore
I was stopped nud arrested, i will be
tried, fined aud imprisoned. 1 made n
mistake. I should have divided my
profits with tbe revenue officers."
"WellV" said tbe other.
"You wish to marry Sophie Reusser.
but you and she are both too poor to
marry. I will enable you to wed. I
have brll>ed tbe officers to give me but
els months' Imprisonment and to ac
cept a substitute. If you will servt
my term for me 1 will give you B.UOO
fraoes."
Martin Grurlug was thoughtful for
a time, then suid, "I will talk with
Sophie about It."
"Tbat I must forbid." said Trupp
"1 would not trust a woman with such
an Important secret."
"But what will she tbiuk?"
"Ob. you cau tell ber you are going
away for a short time to earn the
wherewithal to set up housekeeping."
The result of this proposal was that
Martin acted as Trupp's substitute lu
prison, Brst telling Sophie the story
that had been suggested [le bad no
sooner been Imprisoned than Trupp
told Sophie that ber lover was deceiv
ing ber-that be had committed a
crime for which be was being putilsl.
ed. To prove what be said he took
her to the prison where Martin was
confined and showed ber her lover be
hind bars. Then be held bis wealth
500,000 frnucs, up before ber as u bait
and succeeded In catching her for bis
wife. Soon ufter the marriage the
couple disappeared from the Como re
flon.
Oue summer an elderly American
gentleman and Ills wife rode up In
tbelr automobile to a hotel lo Inter
lakeu, Switzerland, and called for a
guide. One was Introduced, aud the
American engaged him to conduct blui
self aud wife' to the summit of the
Jungfrau. Then the landlord said thai
he bad been a mountaineer In bis youth
and only one guide was needed. Ele
would himself net as such. The party
after proceeding on the mountaiu rail
way to the snow line started from
there to make the ascent of the peak,
the guide lu front, the tady next, and
the husband lu the rear, all bound t>
getber by a rope.
At one place In the ascent their path
led aloug the edge of a rock fcbat
sloped nearly straight downward on
both aides. Suddenly beneath th»
American's feet the Ice gave way ami
be went down. Ills wife fell on lit?
face, and the guide, realizing that stu'
would be pulled down by her husband,
let himself over the other side for a
balance. Suspended thus he at once
set about cutting steps and soon se
cured n foothold. But the American
was a heavy man aud the iwpo was
greatly strained. At one point It
crossed a sharp rock and the efforts of
the mun banging chasm to
save himself gradually wore It thin,
and at last it broke. lie slid down
thousands of feet below to his death
Meanwhile the >;ulde, foresee in"
what must eventually happen, and
knowing that when the rope broke the
shuck might dislodge the lady, had
been backing tlie Ice with his ns and
climbing until be bad secured a firm
position. '"ben the rope parted sh'
fell toward him, and, catching*ber. %•
lifted her again Into position. Then
when she was sufficiently recovered K
stand, be cut bis way up to the edge of
the rock and the two begun to descend.
Reaching a pobit of safety, Ihe lady
fell tu a faint. The guide caught her
lu bis arms. Placing bis flask-all
guides carr; flasks-to ber lips, she re
vlved and, met the two eyes of the
guide looking down luto hers. But
she saw only the horror of her bus
baud suspended over that awfui abyss,
.She shuddered and moaned.
"Sophie," hflld the guide with u
world of sympathy.
There was something in the voice
that, striking n familiar chord, server!
to turn her vUlou from the bonror s
recently experienced. She saw u
young face grown to middle age. Then
the expression of pain returned, bui
this time from a different cause. She
saw the lover of her youth as she bad
seen blm In a' felon s prison. He di
vined ber thought.
"Do you know," he said, "that V
went to ptiuon voluntarily to serve th
tejm of another?"
"So. Whose term?"
"Never mind that. To take the place
of a smuggler I was paid a eiwu o
money which would baiT enabied u
to marry."
Another look of infinite paiu passed
over her
the atory a« It Uas bJRI "Sid. The
guide took her by Hie ba«4 t« (lad her
down; but, SEEING that ate WH naeqwtf
to tbe taek, be teek U?£ to *lAs arwc
and carried her to (be station
Then, after a brief re«t, tWy proceed
ed to Interiaken.
Later, as husbaod and wife, with the
Trupp fortune they built the Grnrlsg
TiUa.
