WILLIAMSTON, N. C.. FRIDAY, APRIL 12. 1912
Interest Growing m Hook

Including April 6th. 1,565 peo
ple in Martin County have been

Judging by the number of peo- :
pie who have alreadv been examin
ed for hookworm disease, we must
infer that we have progressive, wide
•wake people in the county; peo
ple who, when given an opportunity
Villi make the most of it ; however,
there are still many who have not
taken advautage of the opportunity 1
offered by the State and County
Fret Dispensaries—some, no doubt,
from lack of time, yet some from
lack cf interest.
There was a time when "hook
worm disease" was looked upon as
an innovation merely to fill the
newspapers; now, however, it is
regarded by the physicians as being
one of the most common diseases
among the Southern people, where
the moisture, warmth and soil are
especially adapted for the propaga
tion of the parasite. And the
sooner people awakend to the fact
that one in every three of us is in
fected with the disease, and the
sooner we familiarize ourselves with
the simple method of preventing
the spread of the disease, the more
quickly will the disease be eradi
cated.
The disease is very inviduous, as
it is often slow in progress, and so.
mild that the patient continues his
octllpattoh; drags along with a bad
(ee-ling day after day; fails to cpn
suit a physician; continues to grow
weakfr, as the disesse is very
dibiiitating and firally, his system,
being no longer able to resist one
of the many gertns which are con
stantly entering his body, is over
come by typhoid fever, pneumonia
or tuberculosis, etc. This disease
would be far les« serious if it made
every victim sick enough to con
sult a physician So if yon have |
any symptoms of the disease, be
examined either at one of the dis
pensaries or by your physician.
Let everyone take .1 hand in the
campaign, and let us iree ourselves
of this disease. Art? you one of
the three that is infected or are you
on the other sidt? Have jou been j
examined? If not, you haven't
done your duty.
To have hookworm disease is 110
iiiore reflect ion than to have typhoid
fever or malaria. They are all pre
ventable diseases. However, if any
part of the skin comes in coutact
with the dirt which has been con
taminated with night it may
be penetrated by the little hook
worms which produce "ground
itch" as t'uev enter. To prevent
the disease, wear shoes and cease
soil pollution by using a sanitary
closet. Pamphlets on Hookworm
Disease and Sanitary closets are
gladly furnished free at the dis
pensaries. Ask for them.
It has been several weeks since
some people in the county took the
first treatment for hookworm dis
ease. Many of them have returned
for a second, third, and some even,
for a fourth treatment. There has
been marked improvement in most
of the cases who have taken several
'tfeatmenil. They say they feel
Energetic, and have Jost that tired,
listless feeling. You cannot expect
much improvement from only one
treatment, several are necessary.
And remember that immediately
after a treatment, you feel a little
sick and prubabfy worse than be
fore taking it; however, do not let
I that condition prevent your taking
mere treatment, as you cannot ex
pect any great improvement under 1
several weeks.
On the three remaining Fridays, I
Mr. Staton Wynn Drowned
Saturday morning the canoe of
Mr. Staton Wynn was discovered
floating down the river and im
mediately a search was made for
him. A few hours later his body
was found in about four feet of
water which covered the river road
to Conoho. It is supposed that he
went out beiore dav to catch fish
and fell overboard and could not
get out. His wife was away from
home but his children had no
knowledge of the hour that be left
home. Mr. Wynn with his wife
had been living here for several (
years, having removed from his
farm and built a home adjoining (
the buggy factory lot. He possess
ed some means, owning a farm on ,
the Hamilton road.
Sunday afternoon the funeral (
services were held at the late resi-»
dence, Rev. . GJ. Dowell reading
the service of the Church. The (
iuterment was in the family ceme- ,
tery at the old homestead.
Dr. J. T. R. Neal, Prop. River- '
side Drug Co., Greenville, S. C.
writes recently, "I have been a i
practicing physician and druggist :
for over 35 years and sold and ad- '
ministered many kidney medicines
but none to equal Foley Kidney
Pills. They are superior to any I
ever used, and give the quickest
and most permanent relief."

fully spent, while delicious refresh

but owing to illness, was obliged to
cancel tne date. The next meet

interesting comments. The next

nuria," by Dr. B. M. Lot g, of

as it did with the treatment of one
of the most faial diseases prevalent
