Apr«l s, tqt^ Hie Legislative edition of the News & Observer on Saturday will make a good reference sheet, as it contains the important laws made by the last Legislature. The Balkan States are doing their own thinking while they are fighting low. Europe seems to have little effect upon them. They are hewing straight to the " line, and the chips mainly are falling on Turkey. Turks can institute a harem tliat would cap the climax, hut fighting Christians Is a lost art with them. They have had a good spanking this time. Europe is late iii administering it, how ever. Where is your gallon hid? But you do not have to hide if it's only four quarts. Some owners of jugi do their own searching and seizing early in the morning if one is to judge by the color of their noses. The death of J. P. Morgan at Rome. Italy, will cause a flutter in financial circles. Perhaps, no man in the world had a bigger brain for purely money schemes, but like all mankind he must re turn to dust from whence he came. "What is man that thou art mindful of him?" One ruling of Postmaster Gen eral Burleson will strike a hard blow to certain servants of the government. He has made an order that postmasters must work during the eight hours of the day as prescribed by law governing positions under the government. The work in a great majority of offices is done by clerks, while the man who draws the pay sits around or is out looking after other interests. If the govern ment is handing out pensions promiseously, let the disabled citizens get the benefit. We Grow Them The Southern sweet potato in its different varieties has become a necessary food on the bill of fare these days. They are not only a wholesome food but their juiciness commends them to the taste of those who like good things for the palate. The "potato hill" is a necessary adjunct to every farm house, and a loss of the crop produces great distress. For many years the potato was not known as aa article for shipment but the demand now is great, and the luscious "roots" command good prices. Again Martin County comes in as the producer of the best vari ties of the potato. In no section of the South are they more easily produced and is the sweetness more satisfying. Acres and acres of land in the county grow then abundantly with little care fron the farmer. The home market; are furnished with the best pro ducts, and now other places ar asking for shipments of them The acreage in them should b largely increased not only for th demond of the county's specia kind, but because hogs fare wel on them and the bacon is of th finest flavor. The'cultivation o * the yams and the best variety o hamans will open a new avenu for bank savings to the farmers It is a problem to keep the cro free from rot in the winter, bu with care that is €?&sily solved Planting time will soon be here, and it is hoped that a larger amount of "slips" has been bed ded this season. Our people might make potatoe raising an industry that would bring large returns. A study of the condi tions would show the planters how readily they could make ex tra money in this way. Should be Enforced The Legislature placed extra restrictions upon the sale of ciga rettes to minors—boys under seventeen years. If there is one law which needs special notice, this is that one. The State is spending large sums to educate and make a better citizenship and the death-dealing cigarette is un doing what is being done. Teachers in our schools especi ally emphasize the destruction that is being wrought among the boys—some mere babies, who oftentimes walk boldly along the streets smoking. There has been a law for protection, but when the almighty dollar is at stake, the conscience of dealers go to sleep. But they are not always to blame. Older boys and men, too, give the rightly-named "cof fin tacks" to these helpless ones about whom the arm of the State is thrown for protection. There are many parents who try by every means in their power to keep their children from being hurt in this way, but there is ever the loafer around who wants to put the poison in the mouths of the children, especially if the parents are trying to protect them. Such people think it smart to do such mean things. The police have it in their power to stop to a large measure this smoking nuisance among boys. Children who feed their brains and nerves on cigarettes become mere dwarfs, and nine out of ten are unfiitted for the duties of life when they have to make a way for themselves. The best thing that the Legis lature could have done, would have been to have passed a law forbidding both the sale and manufacture of cigarettes. But what a howl was heard when D. M. Clark, of Pitt County, intro duced such a bill! The opposi tion preferred the dollars of the dealers to the brains and lives of the coming generation. Until North Carolina learns to put blood above boodle, will her citi zenship fail in its higher mission. We are publishing this law in this issue, and we ask for its rigid enforcement in this com munity and elsewhere.
