THE ENTERPRISE PUBUSIIED EVERT FRIDAY Williamaton. N. C. WILLIAM C. MANNING, EDITOR SUBSCRIPTION RATES OaeYear .... SI.OO Six Months • • -5° Three Months - - ♦ .25 Strictly Cub In Advaaca Entered at the Post Office at Wllllamstou, H, c. as Second Class Mail Matter. Addrau all Communications to THE ENTERPRISE. Williamston, N. C. Friday, AprU it, IQI3 We have received an article from W. H. Wyatt, of Rutherford, N. J., in which he advocates cis terns in towns. He has been reading our appeals for better public water facilities, and thinks that the cistern proposition will solve the question. There is no trouble aboutwater exceptthat the public well was ruined by a well driller who had little judgment enough to think that he could get an overflow, and the town au thorities have never replaced it. No place in this Eastern section can furnish purer water than is found here. We do net have plenty of water conveniently situated because the City Fathers don't concern themselves sufficiency about things that are worth while. 1 Forty Eight -Years of Peace Wednesday. April 9th. will be remembered as the anniversary of the surrender of Gen. R. E. Lee at Appomattox Court House. Thousands of veterans on both side's of the struggle will remem ber the day as the end of the greatest war of modern times—a was when brother fought against brother each believing tliat he was right. Whatever may have been the issues which brought on the struggle, only the memories of heroic deeds done by the living an.', the dead live in the hearts of tl: • country. The people are one great united whole working to gether for the making of the mo:>t glorious land in all the world. The same flag floats above the heads of the people of the North and South, and for the first time in years has there been a Southern man at the head of the Nation. No less do we'honor, the names of Jackson and Lee. but rather morg for they are the truest types of that manhood which is making America the grcatoat country on the globe. Progress with Tobacco J. I'. Slawter of Forsyth county is a champion among the tobacco growers of this state. For 30 year he has been growing tobac co, and the past year sold $5438 worth of the weed. Mr. Slaw ter's strongest forts lies in his knowledge of the cultivation and preparation of the plant for the market. He sees to it that the _ tobacco is thoroughly cultivated three times, with cultivator and hoe, and that the land is left as nearly level as possible when the last plowing is finished. He never primes his tobacco until it is ready for topping, and at the same time he takes off from the top and bottom of the plant all the unnecessary leaves. The average number of leaves left on the stalk to ripen and be prepar ed fop the market is niue. Not until the tobacco is thor oughly ripe on the stalk does he cut it. and after it is cut and in the barn he takes three days in curing. On the first day he raises the temperature in the barn to 115 degrees and keeps it between that and 120 until the leaf is a bright yellow. Then he carries the temperature up gradually to 150 and leaves it there until the leaf is thoroughly dry, and final ly, to kill the stalk, he lifts the temperature to 180, where it is left until the curing process is finished. He says that if this simple method of curing is fol lowed carefully by tobacco far mers, they will have no trouble in getting a proper cure. He be lieves that the great trouble with many farmers is that they are too impatient, buth in cutting and curing the weed, He also believes in thoroughly grading his tobacco, and to his judgement in this matter his remarkable success may be attributed in a large measure. He makes as many grades as there are classes of tobacco, and says it pays to take a little time to do this.— Sel. Hurt By Mule Tuesday Wheeler Rogers, a young man who lives out near Bear Grass, was brought to town badly injured in the face and head. He was hooking up a mule and the animal becoming angry, pawed Rogers, cutting deep gashes in his brow and face. J. W. Green brought him to town in his car, and Dr. Saunders sew ed up the wounds and made the patient comfortable. Rogers was at one time a mem ber of the ball team here.
