Address all Communications to THE ENTERPRISE. ,' Wllliamaton, N. C. Friday. April tS, 1913 - Congress assembled on Monday The whole country has its eyes turned toward the Capitol. A stuj»endous task is before Presi dent Wilson and both Houses of Congress. The people have faith in the wisdom of each, and there is no uneasiness in the minds of common people, but the money kings are on the anxious seat. In stong contrast to the frage parade on March 3rd, was that of Monday when five hun dred women armed with petitions marched through the streets of Washington unmolested. The city's police have learned a few things since that disgraceful scene. From a glance at the names of some of the paraders, we find several from North Caro lina, although they have their homes at the Capital. This is getting nfear home. Towns and cities which do not poperly govern themselves do not play much of a part in making for the good of the State. Civic salvation is greatly needed in this as in other towns. - Shall We Have Good Roads? Mr. Editor:— I desire to express my views, on the question of good roads for Rol>ersonville Township in Martin County, throngh your paper, and I shall consider it a great favor if you will give me a short space in your issue for this week, that I may reach the voters before the election. I wish to say first,.that if I un derstand the question now being debated by the voters of Rober sonville Township as to good roads, it means simply that we improve our roads to such extent as is necessary under the circum stances to enable the public to pass and repass over them with ease and thereby lessen the time and expense of marketing the produce of the community. Any man with any thought or busi ness judgment, if he will only give the question a few minutes of serious consideration, will see clearly wherein better public roads will benefit all concerned. Take the farmers who live from two to six or eight miles from Robersonville, and let him figure the expense heineures every year in the strain on his team, his wa gons, his carts, the number of loads he has to haul' to town dur ing the year and the length of time required to make a trip to town over bad roads, and then compare those conditions with those of a community that has up to date public roads, why, it is easy for any thinking man to see that the trip can be made quicker, twice as many bales of cotton, twice as many bags of peanuts and guano can be drawn by one mule with good roads to pass over. I dare say that the average farmer l«ses enough time each year to pay double the amount of taxesnecessary to pay for the construction and maintenance of good roads in a fiat country like ours. • The actual figures will show that the Railroads of the town ship would have to i>ay at ieast one-third of the taxes to be col lected, and again the town of Eobersonville will have to pay more than one-third, and that bc ing unquestionably true it seems to me that it will be very unwise in any fanner of Robersonville Township' to fail to take the ad vantage of the opportunity now at his door for good roads, and especially is this true when we > think for a minute that the other > fellow is paying the lions share ' of the expense. I will say frankly, that I be lieve that if every voter in Rob ersonville could have the ques tion fairly presented to him that ninety per cent of them would vote a ticket for good roads at the election to be held in a few days, and I am sorry to say that the question is not being fairly • represented. Tnere are those . among us who have fought to the last ditch every move that has been made along the line of pro gress in the community for the last ! twenty-five or thirty years, and when I say every move, I mean , all suggestions as to the improve • ments in which the general pub , lie have direct concern. They have fought railroads, schools, iron bridges and now they are going over the township misre i presenting the guestion to the un informed. And I say they are misrepre senting the question. I mean to i convey the idea as clearly as may be. that some of the voters of our township are making false state ■ ments as to what the act of the General Assembly provides. They argue that doubtless there will be $50,000.00 bonds issued and 331-3 cents levied regardless of the amourits that may be found nec cessary to construct and maintain good roads, and that there will* be a Treasurer appointed ' who | will hold the surplus funds and use them in his mercantile busi ness. pay no interest on the same, and thereby cheat the people out of their money they pay for good roads. I know the above argu ments are being made for it has been my displeasure to hear such statements made in public places. Tt isTIo say the least, a sad' fact that any community can be sub jected to the wrongs practiced by just such men who call them selves good citizens. Any man with any reasolfabout him knows that the gentlemen named as Supervisors (Mr. J. H. Roberson. Jr.. Samuel T. Everett and Mr. Aaron E. Smith) are not men who would betray their trust. I do not believe two men can be found in Robersonville Township who will say those men are not honest business men, or that those good men would spend the people's money wrongfully, and yet the argument is being made every day. They don't name the indivdual, but put it "they" in their argument, and of course we all know who "They" are. We all know that it will not be necessary to issue over ten thou sant dollars in bonds to begin with, and as many of us know that it will not take fifty thousand dollars to build good roads in Robersonville, and that the act of , the General Assembly only pro vides that not more than fifty thousand can be issued and sold, and that simply because a fifty thousand issue is authorized is no ■ reason that fifty thousand will be , issued and sold. If lam correct ly advised the Robersonville Graded School District was au | thorized to issue three thousand i dollars and that only two thou , sand have been issued to date, and the taxes for the district have been reduced 3 1-3 cents. . The question is simply this; the , man who believes in the progress of his communitytand is willing , to bear his share of the necessary , burdens will vote for good roads • and the old worn out kicker will » continue to kick and will vote to f the contrary. > If those who do not understand will make their own investigation • instead of listening to the kicker - to gain their information they t will be ic a position to act intel • ligently otherwise they will not. I Think seriously before you act r and look before you leap. A FARMER. ■ mm —w-.. _ TAX INOTIGE! * North CaroHna, Martin County. 1, J. C.
