CASHIER v|j THE FOURTH COMMANDMENT It is estimated that the spread of the knowledge of Christ is greater now than at any period since Apostolic times; that there is more activity in missionary work than ever before. But at the same time people are failing to take Christ into their business and social life with the same de gree. Millions are donated to missions; the condition of the poor and oppressed is more care fully looked after and ameliora ted; more care and protection are given to helpless children; plans are greater for the uplift of those who have sunk deep into the evils of intemperance. Yet with all these things being done, there is something out of harmony somewhere, some how. We believe that the desecra tion of the Holy Sabbath Day is the mercury which denotes the temperament of the times. In our homes where the first altar should be raised, there is that laxity which makes the obser vance of the day a mere form. Men and women forget to train to regard the Sab bath as a day apart from the or dinary things of life. And why? Because they have fallen into a nominal observance themselves. Actual manual lalxir may cease in the household, but many di versions occupy the hours of the day, creating a tone contrary to the spirit of the Fourth Com mandment. Local laws forbid the sale of goods from stores, vet anything frdm a suit of clothes to a toothpick can be pur chased. Even the market is kept open for customers in the early hours of the morning, and blind timers get an early start to catch not the worm, but the Sunday boozer. Later the bells call to service, and amid their sounds, the honk of automobiles is heard and should-be worshippers are being whirled away over the good or bad roads, as the case may be. If the law for the civil observance of the Sabbath would be inforced by those whose duty it is, the evil would be greatly lessened, and people Would be made to feel that this is a coun • try inhabited by God's children and not by Sabbath breakers. Should the men who desire to turn the day into one of pront or debauchery, fset the pace for us to follow? Are we doing our whole duty when we attend re ligious services twice'during the day and close our lips instead of proclaimingjagainst the con tempt for law and order which aeems to be abroad in the land? Right is in the hands of the many, and not at of a few whose sole aim isfto lead for god less living in the community. McGowan's Cash Store Is the Logical Place for You to Buy Your Dry Goods, Notions, Shoes, Hats, Gaps, Groceries, Etc. Country Produce Bought and Sold M. B. McGowan The men and women who pro fess to love God and His right eousness and are sitting quietly while open violations of the law are on every side, are wholly lacking in the spirit of the Christ, who cleansed the temple by using thongs upon the backs of those profaning its sacred portals. "Remember the- Sabbath day to keep it holy" should find real expression in the hearts of this and other communities. "The Seventh Day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God". Demand that as far as possible the hours should be free from barter and sale for the convenience of those who neglected their duties the day previous. The crucial moment is now, and the men and women who stand for the uplift of humanity everywhere, should demand a proper observance of the Fourth Commandment. Hamilton Items F. L.
