Fads About the Tobacco

1 ..,v No.,4—REDRYING
4 * V '
C onstant attempts by opponents of cooperative marketing: to dissat
.isi'y members of the tobacco association .. with its redrying policies
have brought to light the fact that that the association has saved
several hundred thousand dollars by cutting the cost of its redry
ir , according to investigation by Sate officials from North Caro
lina, South Carolina, and Virginia, who state in their report:
"The committee has goneinto this criticism very thor
oughly and finds the following:
V ' " *"• * t** ~T"' *-■ • —r ™ J"-- ■ — : * * ——-• ~r~ — ■
' During tiie first year oi its operation the officers of
the association succeeded in getting tne redrying o± its

reurying oi the second year s crop it appeared as il the
principal reoriers would not unuertaKe the work for
less tfian $2.00 per hundred pounds, bome of them want
ed as much as $2.25. as the i92ii crop was a very large
one, the association was laced with the problem oi re--
drying at least two-thirds of the crop, and this increased
price meant an additional cost of several, hundred
thousand dollars.
"From its investigation, the committee believes that
the association saved its members at least 25 cents per
j. hundred pounds in redrying costs on the l&io crop, and;'
perhaps 50 cents per hundred in redrying costs on a'
part of the 1924 crop. The association got a large part of v
its tobacco redried at a cost of $1.75 per hundred in 1923, U
due to the fact that redriers came to this basic price. j
During 1924 the Edmondson Tobacco Co. further
duced its charge for redryin
