Twentieth Century Club
Meet Held Wednesday
The Twentieth Century Club held
its regular semi-monthly meeting at
the home of Mrs. J. G. Godard .Wed
nesday afternoon. The program,
which has been dealing entirely with
contemporary authors this season, was
particularly interesting on this occa
sion when "Babbit'* and "Main Street,'
Sinclair Lewis's two most popular and
widely discussed novels were criticized
most thoroughly by Mrs. J. H. Saun
ders. This criticism was followed by
a solo, "The World is Waiting for the
Sunrise,'' by Mrs. J. S. Rhodes, ac
companied by Mrs. Warren Biggs.
Mrs. W. B. Watts, substituting for
Mrs. C. H. Godwin, gave a reading on
Sinclair Lewis. Mrs. Warren Biggs
concluded the program with current
events. Mrs. Godard served delight
ful refreshments to her guests, who
besides the club members, included
Mrs. Arthur White, Mrs. W. T. Hun
ter, Miss Delia Peebles, and Mrs. S. S.
Lawrence, of Richmond.
Mrs. Godard Hostess to
Members of Card Club
Mrs. J. G. Godard was hostess to
her card club members yesterday af
ternoon from 3.30 to 6 o'clock and the
following invited guests: Mrs. Oscar
Anderson, Mrs. J. W. Manning, Mrs.
J. W. Watts, jr., Mrs. Elbert Peel,
and Mrs. S. S. Lawrence, of Richmond.l
Mrs. J. S. Rhodes won the club prize,
which was a lovely powder Jar, and
Mrs. Elbert S. Peel won high score
and received the guest prize, which
was a hand-painted water set. Mrs.
Godard's refreshments, consisting of
chicken naiad, sandwiches, potato chips
pickles, and tea, were served at 6 o'-
clock.
A CORRECTION
In our last Friday's issue we stated
in writing of the death of Mrs. C. V.
Lanier that she died from injuries re
ceived in a fall. In this we were mis
informed and later found that her
death resulted from an attack of
pneumonia. We regret making the
eiror, which was called to our atten
tion by members of her family.
Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Horton spent
Armistice Day in Morehead City.
Miss Mary Leggett, of Tarboro, has
been spending a few days with her
mother.
Mr. W. M. Harrison, of Danville
and Mr. Hughes, of the Reliable To
bacco Co., of Washington, were in
town yesteiMay for a few hours. Mr.
Harrison is very pleasantly remem
bered in Williamston, where he was on
the local tobacco market for three
years, buying tobacco at that time for
the J. P. Taylor Co.
