Horton, Federal prohibition a gent from Chatham County, declared that he was in Gawk on November 4 and 5. On the night of November 4 he, in company with the other agents, saw Ellison sell liquor to an old col ored man and they also bought a dol lar's worth. He testified that on the morning of the fifth they found a half gallon of liquor in Ellison's place, cap tured it and destroyed it Other a gents testified to the same general facta. Ellison did not offer any testimony,' but through his attorneys put up the same old fight, introducing and inject-! ing prejudice in the jury box. After all the teatimony was in the attorneys for both the State and, defense ad-) dressed the jury. After which court adjourned until Friday morning at 1)! o'clock, when the case will go to thei jury following tha charge of the court J. S. WILLIAMS GETS SIXTEEN MONTHS (Continued from first page) Williams and wife and occupied a room there. In a few days it came to the knowledge of both Mrs. Manning and Mrs. Perry that they had been im posed on, and they proceeded to go after the protection the law guaran tees against these deeds. Warrants issued from this county were sent to Washington County for service. When arrested Williams was at the home of the Phelps girl. He bucceaded in furnishing bond 'in the sum of SI,OOO, but his bondsman turn ed him over to the sheriff because of rumors that Williams was preparing to skip. At the trial Thursday the State put on Mrs. perry and Mrs. Ball Man ning, who gave in detail the transac tions as to their claim to be man and wife. Sheriff Held, of Washington Coun ty, deacribed Williams's denial of the crime when arrested, and that later— on Sunday—he admitted his guilt, said that he knew the Phelps girl and that she was 21 years old. Hon. Carl Bailey, of Bo per, was put on the stand and stated that Williams lived in Roper, that his wife was 46 or 50 years old and lived with him. Mr. Kemp, alao of Boper, testified that he knew Williams ta be a mar ried man and that he lived in Boper. Williama did not put on any teati mony. The court adjudged him guilty and sentenced him to the roads of Edge combe County for the term of 16 months, Williams gave notice of ap peal to the superior aenzt to b beginning December 14. The court fixed his bond at SI,OOO for his ap pearance, and open his failure to fur nish the bond ha was remanded to Jan.
